Governor signs executive order on gun safety

DEAD IN HIS HOME, THE DEACON AT THE WHITE OAK HILL MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH. ALVIN HARRIS TURNED HIMSELF IN AND IS HELD IN JOHNSTON COUNTY JAIL WITHOUT BOND. WE NEED TO WORK HARDER TO KEEP GUNS OUT OF THE WRONG HANDS. WITH KIDS GOING BACK TO SCHOOL SOON, SAFETY IS A MAJOR CONCERN. THE GOVERNOR SIGNED EXECUTIVE ORDERS DEALING WITH GUN SAFETY BUT HE SAID THE STATE NEEDS TO GO FURTHER. WE HAVE MORE FROM GREENSBORO WHERE STATE LEADERS ARE WRAPPING UP A SUMMIT ON SCHOOL SAFETY. Reporter: LAST SCHOOL YEAR ENDED WITH A SHOOTING AT UNC CHARLOTTE AND THE TOP PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICIALS ARE HERE AT UNC GREENSBORO LOOKING HOW TO RESPOND TO HOW IT HAPPENS AGAIN TO TRY TO PREVENT IT. THE DEADLY SHOOTING AT UNC CHARLOTTE REINFORCED THE THREAT OF VIOLENCE EVERY DAY AND ON MONDAY, DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR ROY COOPER SIGNED NEW DIRECTIVES RELATED TO GUN SAFETY. WE NEED TO WORK HARDER TO KEEP GUNS OUT OF THE WRONG HANDS. Reporter: LAST YEAR HE TOLD THE FBI TO REVIEW INFORMATION BEING SAID TO THE BACKGROUND SYSTEM AND SINCE THEN MORE THAN 284,000 INDIVIDUAL CONVICTIONS HAD NOT BEEN REPORTED AND ADDED TO THE DATABASE. THEY ARE CONTINUING TO PROVIDE WHAT IS CALLED BEHAVIORAL THREAT ASSESSMENT TRAINING TO LOCAL POLICE AND UNC GREENSBORO CHIEF PAUL LESTER HAS WORKED WITH THE STATE TO IDENTIFY THREATS. IT’S MORE THAN WHAT IS HAPPENING LOCALLY, BUT ON A GLOBAL SCALE, FAR MORE BENEFICIAL. Reporter: LAWMAKERS NEED TO GO FURTHER TO EXPAND BACKGROUND CHECKS AND PASS A RED FLAG LAW THAT WILL ALLOW COURTS TO TEMPORARILY TAKE GUNS FROM SOMEONE THAT IS A THREAT TO THEMSELVES OR OTHERS. A SURVIVOR OF THE CHARLOTTE SHOOTING URGED LAWMAKERS TO ACT LAST WEEK. IF THEY WANT TO LAUGH IN MY FACE, SOMEONE WHO WENT THROUGH THIS, I’D LOVE TO SEE THAT BECAUSE THIS IS NO JOKE. Reporter: I ASKED A REPUBLICAN WHY LEGISLATORS HAVE NOT DEBATED ON THOSE BILLS. FOR THE RED FLAG, WE DON’T LIKE GENERIC LANGUAGE BUT WOULD LIKE TO BRING PEOPLE AND TO SEE HOW IT ACCOMMODATES NORTH CAROLINA AND IF WE NEED TO HAVE THAT OR WE DON’T. Reporter: BOTH THE GOVERNOR AND THE REPUBLICAN LEGISLATURE
