JOE: MILLIONS OF VISITORS COME TO OUR ISLANDS EVERY YEAR. UNFORTUNATELY, A FEW NEVER MAKE IT HOME. FROM DROWNINGS TO HIKING TRAGEDIES… THE HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY HAS BECOME INVOLVED IN MAKING SURE VISITORS ARE MORE AWARE OF HAWAII’S HIDDEN DANGERS. NIKKI SCHENFELD EXPLAINS. NIKKI: IT’S CALLED THE KULEANA CAMPAIGN AND INCLUDES SAFETY AND CULTURAL VIDEOS FROM EACH COUNTY. THE VIDEOS WILL AIR ON CERTAIN FLIGHTS AND IN HOTEL ROOMS TO HELP EDUCATE VISITORS. THE HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY RELEASING SEVERAL VIDEOS TODAY TO EDUCATE VISITORS TO HAWAII. H-T-A SAYS THE VIDEOS INCLUDE TIPS ON SWIMMING, SNORKELING, AND HIKING. THIS COMES AS TWO HIKERS REMAIN MISSING ON TWO DIFFERENT ISLANDS. I SPOKE TO BARBARA BRUNO WHO WORKS FOR THE HAWAIIAN TRAIL AND MOUNTAIN CLUB… SHE SAYS THE VIDEOS ARE A GOOD START. BARBARA BRUNO/ HAWAIIAN TRAIL AND MOUNTAIN CLUB HIKE COORDINATOR: “HAWAII IS PARADISE THAT’S THE REPUTATION WE HAVE SO PEOPLE THEREFORE ASSUME THEY CAN SWIM IN THE OCEAN OR GO HIKING AND EVERYTHING WILL BE SAFE BUT THAT’S NOT A TRUE STATEMENT.” BARBARA BRUNO/ HAWAIIAN TRAIL AND MOUNTAIN CLUB HIKE COORDINATOR: “WE CAN DEF TALK ABOUT HIKE SAFETY AND WHAT WE CAN DO TO MAKE OURSELVES HAVE A SAFER EXPERIENCE BUT I THINK THE REAL QUSETION WE HAVE TO ASK OURSELVES IS WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN SO OFTEN IN HAWAII?” SHE SAYS MANY OF THE TRAILS AREN’T MAINTAINED WELL. BARBARA BRUNO/ HAWAIIAN TRAIL AND MOUNTAIN CLUB HIKE COORDINATOR: “MANY OF OUR TRAILS HAVE A LOT OF JUNCTIONS, SIGNS THINK WE HAVE TO ASK OURSELVES WHAT SHOULD WE BE DOING TO ENSURE HIKER SAFETY RATHER THAN ALWAYS PUTTING THE BURDEN ON THE HIKER.” STEVE BRITTAIN.. WHO’S SON KYLE HAS BEEN MISSING IN THE WAIPIO VALLEY AREA FOR NEARLY TWO WEEKS… SAYS IT’S BAFFLING NO ONE SAW HIS SON ON THE BUSY LABOR DAY WEEKEND. STEVE BRITTAIN/KYLE’S FATHER: “IT IS PRETTY BAFFLING AND THAT’S WHY NO ONE CAN REALLY UNDERSTAND — PEOPLE HAVE HIKED THIS FOR YEARS AND AS FAR AS WE KNOW NO ONES EVER FALLEN OFF OR NOT BEEN FOUND ON IT.” EVEN EXPERTS RECOMMEND READING UP ON PLACES BEFORE YOU GO BARBARA BRUNO/ HAWAIIAN TRAIL AND MOUNTAIN CLUB HIKE COORDINATOR: “HAWAII DOES HAVE UNIQUE DANGERS AND IT’S IMPORTANT TO BUILD YOUR SKILLS HERE.” NIKKI: FOUR AIRLINES WILL BE SHOWING THE VIDEOS TO PASSENGERS BEFORE THEY ARRIVE. THE VIDEOS HAVE ALSO BEEN TRANSLATED INTO JAPANESE, CHINESE AND KOREAN. H-T-A SAYS TOURISM DOLLARS ARE BEING USED TO FUND AND DISTRIBUTE THE VIDEOS. JOE? It's not the land that's dangerous. It's the few riff raff people.

My opinion is that tourist needs to RESPECT the Aina not just take it for granted and think everything will be okay because their in paradise…… If there’s signs telling you “Do not Trespass ” don’t do it…. If there’s a sign saying ”Kapu” and you don’t understand it, get out your phone and look it up… Same goes for the ocean…. Be aware of your surroundings…. or what the locals say ”No be hardhead”…..and there won’t be so much tragedies…. I pray for those families who’s still missing their loved ones. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Common I see Locals breaking these rules. Ask the High schoolers how many times they went smoking up the mountain. Left Beer bottles behind.
