UNUSUAL FIRST DAY OF SUMMER WITH GARTH KEMP HERE IN STUDIO AND GREG MILLS IN THE HIGH DESERT, AND IS WE BEGIN WITH GREG WHERE SOME PEOPLE MIGHT GET THEIR POWER CUT TO PREVENT WILDFIRES, GREG? REPORTER: MIGHT VERY WELL HAPPEN, PAT. WILDFIRE RIGHT HERE ALONG THE 15 FREEWAY IN HE IS PAIR YA YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AT THIS TIME. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON HAS WARNED ABOUT 1600 CUSTOMERS THEIR POWER MIGHT BE CUT THIS AFTERNOON OR TONIGHT FOR SAFETY SAKE. CELL PHONE VIDEO OF A RUSH HOUR FIRE. THIS ISN’T THE FIRST TIME. IT’S BEEN OUR SECOND SCARE, AND IT’S, IT WAS QUITE CLOSE THIS TIME AROUND. HER HUSBAND, JOSE, USED THE HOSE TO WET EVERYTHING DOWN. THIS FIRE BURNED 40 ACRES IN TEN MINUTES ALONG THE 15 FREEWAY. AND IT MADE IT IN A VERY, VERY RAPID FASHION. BECAUSE OF OUR 35 MILE-AN-HOUR WINDS THAT WE HAVE CLOCKED OUT HERE RIGHT NOW. REPORTER: THE CAUSE? DON’T KNOW, BUT DOWNED POWER LINES WERE THE CAUSE OF THIS DEADLY FIRE THAT KILLED 85 PEOPLE AND DESTROYED THE TOWN OF PARADISE LAST ARE YEAR. THE THOMAS FIRE STARTED THE SAME WAY. TRYING TO PREVENT MORE DEVASTATING FIRES CAUSED BY DOWNED POWER LINES — OUR INTENT IS TO TRY TO MINIMIZE THE LIKELIHOOD OF THAT HAPPENING. REPORTER: TO DO THAT, WHEN EXTREME FIRE CONDITIONS WARRANT, CALIFORNIA POWER COMPANIES WILL CUT POWER TO AFFECTED AREAS. YOU SEE, A DOWNED POWER LINE CAN’T START A FIRE IF THERE’S NO ELECTRICITY RUNNING THROUGH IT. THAT’S VERY GOOD OF THEM TO DO THAT. REPORTER: IF POWER IS CUT, IT WILL REMAIN OFF UNTIL THEY BELIEF THE DANGER HAS PASSED. SOCAL EDISON TOLD ME THEY WILL TRY TO GIVE WARNING THAT POWER COULD BE CUT TO AN AREA DUE TO HIGH WINDS AND FIRE DANGER. THE COUPLE CAN DEAL WITH THE INCONVENIENCE. MOST DEFINITELY. IT’S TOTALLY WORTH SAVING EVERYONE’S LIFE. REPORTER: HERE IS THE SOCAL EDISON MAP SHOWING AREAS MOST PRONE TO WILDFIRES. RED MEANS YOU LIVE IN AN EXTREME FIRE DANGER RISK ZONE. GOLD MEANS YOU ARE IN AN AREA WELL SATED FIRE DANGER RISK — ELEVATED FIRE DANGER RISK. AND AS YOU CAN SEE, THIS IS THE AREA THAT BURNED YESTERDAY AT RUSH HOUR, 40 ACRES IN TEN MINUTES. PAT AND JEFF, THE WINDS ARE JUST AS STRONG TODAY, IF NOT EVEN STRONGER.
