TIME. HUNDREDS OF BOATS OF ALL SIZES HAVE TRANSFORMED THE WATERS OFF THE COAST OF SAN DIEGO INTO AN ARENA FOR ONE OF THE OLDEST COMPETITIONS IN SPORTS, THE AMERICA’S CUP. HELLO EVERYONE I’M FRANK GIFFORD AND WELCOME TO THIS SPECIAL EDITION OF ABC’S WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS. DURING THE NEXT THREE HOURS WE WILL BRING YOU LIVE COVERAGE OF THE FIRST RACE OF THE 1992 AMERICA’S CUP A BEST-OF-SEVEN SERIES BETWEEN THE CHALLENGER, IL MORO AND THE DEFENDER, AMERICA 3. THE AMERICA’S CUP IS A LONG AND STORIED HISTORY. IT WAS COMMISSIONED BY QUEEN VICTORIA OF EEFNGLAND FOR AN INTERNATIONAL REGATTA. THAT WAS BACK IN 1851, 10 YEARS BEFORE THE OUTBREAK OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. IT WAS A 53-MILE RACE AROUND THE ISLE OF WIGHT AND THE PRIZE STANDING 27 INCHES HIGH AND FASHIONED OUT OF 134 OUNCES OF SILVER WAS CALLED THE 100 GUINEAS CUP. THAT FIRST RACE WAS WON BY THE LOAN FOREIGNEN TRIA SKOONER FROM THE UNITED STATES CALLED AMERICA. AND THE CUP HAS HELD ITS CURRENT NAME EVER SINCE. THIS IS MY INTRODUCTION TO THE AMERICA’S CUP. THERE ARE FEW EVENTS THAT ARE NEW TO WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS. THE AMERICA’S CUP WAS TELEVISED FOR THE FIRST TIME BY WIDE WORLD BACK IN 1962. THAT WAS ONLY OUR SECOND YEAR ON THE AIR. IN THOSE DAYS THE MRK’S CUP WAS A FIRE SIMPLER PURSUIT AND OUR COVERAGE WAS FAR LESS SOPHISTICATED THAN IT IS TODAY. >>WE WILL TAKE A LOOK OVER THE COURSE OVER WHICH THESE BOATS WILL BE SAILING. THE COURSE SELECTED FOR TODAY AND THE COURSE VARIES FROM RACE TO RACE IS A TRIANGULAR ONE. IT STARTS RIGHT HERE AT THE AMERICA’S CUP BUEY, GOES EIGHT MILES ON A BEAT WHICH MEANS INTO THE WIND AND THEY GO AROUND A TUGBOAT MARKER, GOES ON A REEVE WITH A CROSSWIND, AROUND A TUG AGAIN ANOTHER REACH TO HOME AND THAT’S THE RACE WILL END IF INDEED THEY ARE ABLE TO GET IT OFF THIS AFTERNOON. FRANK: WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY TO REACH SAILTRACK, SATELLITES OF FD 100 MILLION INVESTMENTS. BEFORE TODAY’S RACE IS OVER, WE HOPE YOU KNOW MORE ABOUT THE SPORT THE EVENT AND THE MEN WHO ARE FIGHTING FOR THE OLDEST TROPHY IN SPORTS, THE AMERICA’S CUP. I HOPE I DO, TOO. LET’S JOIN JIM KELLY AND GARY JOHNSON AND JACK WHITAKER WHO WILL JOIN US TODAY, WHAT A SUPER JOB YOU HAVE BEEN DOING COVERING THE EVENT SINCE WAY BACK IN JANUARY. FOR ME, THANKS FOR REVALIDATING A THREE MAN BOOTH. >>IT IS GREAT TO BE ON BOARD WITH YOU AND JACK. IN THE NEXT FEW HOURS YOU WILL KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PORT AND STAR BOARD. YOU ARE LOOKING AT LIVE PICTURES FROM THE PACIFIC, THE HUGE SPECTATOR FLEET THAT IS OUT THERE NOW, THAT IS PART OF THE PROBLEM, CROWD CONTROL, BOAT CONTROL. UNDER A BIT OF A BRIEF POSTPONEMENT, IDEAL WINDS THE BREEZE WILL BLOW BETWEEN 10 AND 14 KNOTS THIS AFTERNOON FROM HIGH OVERHEAD LIVE PICTURES AGAIN DOWN ON U.S.A. 23. THAT IS THE WHITE BOAT THAT BELONGS TO THEçINTHE WHITE THAT IS WILLIAM INGRAHAM KOCH, 51 YEARS OF AGE, THE OWNER OF THIS SYNDICATE AND THE CO-HELMSMAN A MAN THAT STARTED SAILING EIGHT YEARS AGO, VERY SUCCESSFUL IN THE MATADOR PROGRAM, THE MAXIS, AND ON BOARD, THE PROUD MEN OF IL MORO DI VENEZIA, PAUL CAYARD IS THE GENERAL MANAGER AND THE SKIPPER OF ITA 25, IL MORO, THE FIFTH IN A LONG LINE OF BOASTS BUILT BY THE MONTEDISON ASSEMBLY LINE. THERE IS CAYARD, A NATIVE SAN FRANCISCO, HE STARTED SELLING WHEN HE WAS JUST EIGHT YEARS OF AGE BY THE TIME HE WAS A TEENAGER HE WAS WINNING NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. YOU MIGHT HAVE SEEN US FROM 12,000 MILES AWAY OUT THERE IN THE INDIAN OCEAN WHEN WE WERE IN FREMANTLE, WESTERN AUSTRALIA. WELCOME BACK. MY COLLEAGUE ALONGSIDE. THE AMERICA’S CUP THE OLDEST TROPHY IN SPORTS. IT HASN’T CHANGED MUCH. BUT BACK IN 1962 YOU SEE THAT COURSE GRAPHIC WITH OUR COLLEAGUE JIM MCKAY THE COURSE HAS CHANGED, WE HAVE A NEW EIGHT-LEG AMERICA’S CUP COURSE. AFTER 163 RACES FOR THE CHALLENGERS AND DEFENDERS, AFTER THREE AND A HALF MONTHS OF GRUELING COMPETITION IT HAS COME DOWN TO JUST TWO, ITALY AND THE MEN OF AMERICA 3. WHAT’S THE MOOD ON AMERICA 3 TODAY? >>THEY ARE VERY EXCITED RIGHT NOW. THIS TEAM HAS BEEN TRAINING FOR A YEAR AND A HALF. THEY ARE READY. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO GO BACK TO BASICS, NOT WHORE ABOUT THE OUTCOME OF THE RACE JUST WORRY ABOUT THE SITUATION AT HAND, CONCENTRATE ON THE WIND, CONCENTRATE ON THE SAILS, ALL THOSE NERVOUS BUTTERFLIES WILL GO AWAY AND THEY WILL BE READY FOR A BIG RACE. >>THE MEN OF AMERICA 3 TOOK IT WAY FROM CONNER, THEY HAD A GRUELING BEFDER SERIES, CONNER CAME BACK, WON 4-5 AND SQUARED UP THE SERIES AND AMERICA 3 WON THREE IN A ROW TO WIN THE DEFENDER SERIES. FOR THE CHALLENGERS, THEY HAD A BEST OF NINE. IL MORO OUSTING THE KIWIS AFTER NEW ZEALAND LED IN THAT RACE 3-1. FOR THE AMERICA’S CUP, BEST-OF-SEVEN. HOW ABOUT ITALY? >>THE BEST I LIKE ABOUT IL MORO DI VENEZIA IS THE SKIPPER. PAUL CAYARD IS FANTASTIC. HIS CREW HAD PROBLEMS EARLY. THEY HAVE COME ON. THE BOAT PERFORMS BETTER IN HEAVIER WINDS AND AS A RESULT AMERICA 3 IS NOW ORIENTED THEIR BREEZE TO THE HEAVIER WIND TO GO UP AGAINST THE ITALIANS. WE COULD SEE EASILY SIX OR SEVEN RACES IN THIS MATCH. >>A RED-HULD BOAT HAS NEVER WON THE AMERICA’S CUP. A BEST-OF-SEVEN. ITALY UP AGAINST U.S.A. 23 AND IT IS LIVE FROM THE PACIFIC. JIM: CLOUDS OVERHEAD BUT A GOOD DAY FOR RACING. THE BREEZE WILL BE BLOWING BETWEEN 10 AND 14 KNOTS. WE WILL HAVE RACING. THE POSTPONEMENT IS BECAUSE OF THE SPECTATOR FLEET AND CROWD CONTROL. IT IS ITALY UP AGAINST AMERICA 3. THE PRESTART COMING UP, NOT VERY LONG FROM NOW. LET’S CHECK IN WITH PETER. HOW ARE THEY DOING? >>THEY ARE GETTING THERE. PLENTY OF WIND RIGHT NOW. 10 KNOTS OUT OF THE SOUTH. BOTH SAILING TEAMS WANT TO GET THIS RACE STARTED. ABOUT 800 SPECTATORS ARE OFF THE RACE COURSE. THE POSTPONEMENT FLAG WENT DOWN ABOUT 15 MINUTES TO GO UNTIL THE START. JIM: THE WAY THE SEAS ARE BOBBING UP AND DOWN NOW, KNOWING WHAT CHANGES OR AT LEAST SUSPECTING WHAT CHANGES WE HAVE SEEN ON AMERICA 3, WHICH BOAT DOES WEATHER CONDITIONS FAVOR? >>IT WILL BE INTERESTING. WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE WIND CONDITIONS. WE THOUGHT IL MORO MIGHT HAVE BEEN BETTER IN THE STRONG WINDS BUT 10 KNOTS, VERY CHOPPY, I WOULD LIKE AMERICA 3 AS LONG AS THEIR KEEL CHANGE HAS KEPT THEM AS FAST AS THEY WERE WHEN THEY RACED STARS & STRIPES. JIM: WE ARE LOOKING ON BOARD AMERICA 3. THE PRESTART, 10 MINUTES BEFORE THE START OF THE RACE. SO MUCH IS DECIDED IN THE PRESTART AS FAR AS STRATEGY AND GETTING WHICH SIDE OF THE LINE YOU WANT TO BE ON. LET’S LOOK AT THE PRESTART. >>THE STARTING LINE IS PERP DICK LAR TO THE STARTING DIRECTION FMZ BEFORE THE WARNING SIGNAL, THEY WILL DETERMINE THE LAY LINES MUCH THE BATTLE ZONES OF THE PRESTART ARE DEFINED BY THESE LINES. ZONES ONE AND THREE ARE CONSIDERED SAFER THAN TWO AND FOUR BASED ON EASE OF ESCAPING OF PIN AND ACHIEVING AN EVEN START. AT THE 10 MINUTE SIGNAL, EACH BOAT ENTERS THE STARTING ARENA FROM ITS ASSIGNED END. NORMALLY THE BOATS WILL PROCEED ON A CONVERGING COURSE SETTING UP THE FIRST IN A NUFRE IN A FREE-FORM BATTLE. THEY GO IN CLOCKWISE AVOIDING BEING TAILED AND PINNED BY THE ENEMY. EACH BOAT EXTENDS ON TACK TO BUILD SPEED. THE BOATS BREAK OFF CIRCLING AND HEAD BACK TO THE LINE FOR THE START. JIM: LIVE PICTURES FROM THE PACIFIC. A COUPLE MINUTES FROM THE PRESTART. THAT’S THE 10-MINUTE GUN COUNTING DOWN FROM THE START OF THE RACE. YOU WON’T MISS ANYTHING WHEN THE TWO BOATS ENTER FROM OPPOSITE SIDES. THEN WE WILL JOUFT FOR POSITION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PRESTART ARENA AND DUCK IN N OUT OF THE SPECTATOR FLEET. IT IS FASCINATING AND COMING BACK NEXT. JIM: BACK LIVE IN THE PACIFIC. THE HUGE SPECK TEATOR FLEET PART OF THE PROBLEM. WE ARE SECONDS AWAY FROM THE PRESTART. AMERICA’S CUP 1992. RACE ONE, IL MORO DI VENEZIA, UP AGAINST AMERICA 3. BILL KOCH HAS SPENT AT LEAST $65 MILLION. RAUL GARDINI, WELL OVER $100 MILLION IN PURSUIT OF YACHTING’S HOLY GRAIL. IT COMES DOWN TO THIS BEST-OF-SEVEN. GARY JOBSON, WHY IS THE PRESTART SO IMPORTANT? GARY: THE WHOLE IDEA IS TO GET AN ADVANTAGE, COMPARED WITH YOUR OPPONENT AS YOU ENTER THE LINE. YOU WANT TO BE UP TO FULL SPEED, AS CLOSE TO THE LINE AS YOU CAN, HEADING TOWARD THE FAVORED SIDE OF THE COURSE. THE FAVORED SIDE OF THE COURSE IS WHERE THERE IS MORE WIND. FOR SAILORS EVEERWHERE, THIS IS A MAGIC MOMENT, ONLY THE 28TH TIME IN 148 YORSE THAT WE HAVE BEEN AT THIS MAGIC MOMENT. JIM: THE GUN OF THE PRESTART, NOT THE START OF THE RACE. THAT’S 9:52 SECONDS AWAY. PETER, TO YOUR EYE, WHICH END THE PIN END OF THE LINE OR THE COMMITTEE BOAT END OF THE LINE WOULD BE FAVORED? PETER: THE RACE COMMITTEE HAS DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB. THE LINE IS SQUARE. NEITHER END IS FAVORED. WE WILL SEE IF THERE ARE ANY WIND SHIFTS IN THE FINAL 9:30 BEFORE THE STARTING GUN. JIM: THE RED-HULD BOAT, NUMBER 5 OFF THE MONTEDISON ASSEMBLY LINE, RAUL GARDINI BUILDING FIVE OF THOSE AMERICA CUP BOATS. BRAND NEW CLASS. BILL KOCH’S BOAT IS GENERATION THREE. YOU GET 1% MORE BOAT SPEED WITH EACH GENERATION OF BOAT. OVER 20 MILES, IT COMPUTES TO A LOT. PETER? PETER: THE RIGHT OF WAY FOR AMERICA 3, THEY ARE ON STAR BOARD TACK. K.R. TURNS UP TO AVOID A CONFRONTATION. GOOD MOVE. GARY: AS THESE BOATS MAKE THEIR CIRCLE, THEY ARE GUIDED BY SEVERAL RULES. THE FUNDAMENTAL RULES IS TO KEEP THE BOATS FROM HAVING A COLLISION. THERE IS A COUPLE MOTOR BOATS CLOSE BY. ON BOARD THESE POWER BOATS ARE UMPIRES. THE FIRST TIME IN THE AMERICA’S CUP THAT WE HAVE HAD UMPIRES. TF THERE IS A RULES INFRACTION. JIM: OUR CADILLAC RACE CONDITIONS. PETER: IL MORO HAS TAKEN THE ADVANTAGE ON AMERICA 3 GETTING IN A FAVORED BEHIND POSITION AS THEY DRIVE THEM AWAY FROM THE LINE. GARY: THEY HAVE BEEN VERY AGGRESSIVE IN THE PRESTART, IL MORO. GARY: IL MORO WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER SO FAST AND GET IN THIS POSITION. PETER: WE THINK THE RUDDER BLADE IN BACK OF IL MORO’S BOAT IS BIGGER THAN AMERICA 3. THEY MAY HAVE MORE GRIP AND COULD MOVE FASTER. THAT COULD BE AN ADVANTAGE AT THE START. PETER: SPEED IN THESE BOATS AND CONDITIONS IS ABOUT 10 KNOTS OR 10 MILES PER HOUR. THE TWO BOATS ARE SAILING AT ABOUT 5 MILES PER HOUR. THEY ARE ABOUT HALF SPEED. JIM: LET’S SHOW OUR SAILTRACK. WE WILL SHOW YOU THE PLETSAL LIKE GYRATIONS OF THE PRESTART. GARY: THE TWO BOATS CAME FROM OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE STARTING LINE AT THE END OF THE SCREEN. THEY DID A COUPLE QUICK CIRCLES. IL MORO IS DIRECTLY BEHIND AMERICA 3. THE IDEA IS TO PUSH THEM TOWARD THE STARTING LINE OR IN FACT OVER THE LINE IF THEY CAN. JIM: THE START LINE. A LONG WAY. UNDER SEVEN MINUTES TO GO. THEN THEY WILL BEGIN THREE AND A QUARTER NAUGHT CAL MILES. THE SEAS ARE GOOD TODAY. PETER: A NICE CHOP ON THE WATER. TWO FEET OF SWELL, TWO FEET OF CHOP. JIM: ON BOARD AMERICA 3. THE MEN IN THE MIDDLE, THOSE ARE THE GRINDERS. ALL PHYSICAL SPECIMENS. WE WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THE POSITIONS OF THE CREW AS WE DEVELOP OUR STORY LINES OVER THE NEXT TWO HOURS PLUS. MAN IN THE FRONT IS THE BOWMAN. LET’S LISTEN TO BILL KOCH. HE IS 51 YEARS OF AGE. CHAIRMAN OF OXBOW CORPORATION IN MASSACHUSETTS, A HOME IN WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA. HE IS THE MAN THAT HAS SPENT IN4 EXCESS OF 65 MILLION. THAT’S RIGHT. $65 MILLION. MEDICAL GUESS, THE HEAD BOWMAN. THE NAVIGATOR IS BYE BALLDRIDGE. PETER: AMERICA 3 IS LOOKING FOR A SPECTATOR BOAT TO USE THEM AS A PICK LIKE A BASKETBALL GAME TO GET THEM AWAY FROM IL MORO. BUT IL MORO CLEARLY HAS THE ADVANTAGE RIGHT NOW. PETER: THEY HAVE DONE A VERY GOOD JOB. NORMALLY YOU DON’T SEE THE PRESTART ACTION TAKING PLACE BY THE BUEY END OF THE STARTING LINE. IL MORO HAS HAD GREAT CONTROL THROUGHOUT THE PRESTART. GARY: AMERICA 3 GOING AROUND THAT SPECTATOR BOAT. THEY ARE USING THEM AS A PICK, AND THEY WILL CIRCLE AROUND. THEY CANNOT GO THROUGH THE SPECTATOR BOATS SO THEY WILL BE ABLE TO GET BACK TO THE LINE SAFELY. SO FAR, THE ITALIANS HAVE DONE A NICE JOB SO FAR. JIM: BUDDY MELGES, KNOWN AS THE WIZARD, FROM ZAHN DA, WISCONSIN. WHAT WAS IT LIKE? BUSINESS AS USUAL. HE WAS DRAWING ON HIS LIFETIME OF SAILING EXPERIENCE TO PUT EVERYTHING IN PERSPECTIVE. >>IT IS BUSINESS AS USUAL. ANOTHER SAILBOAT RACE. IT’S TOO EARLY TO START GETTING TOO CRANKED UP. WE WOULD LIKE TO BUILD IT UP TO THE FOURTH RACE THAT WE HAVE TO WIN TO CLINCH THE DEFENSE. AND I GUESS THAT’S IT. JIM: GARY BUDDY WAS SO NERVOUS THIS MORNING, HE CALLED HIS TWO SONS, HANS AND HARRY, WHO WON BOATWORKS IN WISCONSIN, TO SEE HOW BUSINESS WAS. DAD, YOU ARE SAILING IN THE AMERICA’S CUP. I KNOW, BUT ARE WE SELLING ANY BOATS? GARY: A LITTLE EXTRA PRESSURE. RIGHT NOW, IL MORO, THE RED BOOT, DOES HAVE A BIG ADVANTAGE OVER AMERICA 3. AMERICA 3 HAS TO STAY CLEAR. THEY ARE BEARING OFF. THE ROLES REVERSE. THE WHITE BOAT IS THE LURE BOAT, NOW HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY. THAT’S THE BOAT AWAY FROM THE WIND, AMERICA 3. JIM: YOU WILL NOTICE THE BOWMAN ON AMERICA 3 HAS HIS ARM OUT AND USING AN ARM SIGNAL. WHEN HIS THUMB IS IN THE AIR THERE IS NO OVERLAP IN THE BOATS. WHEN HIS THUMB DOES GO DOWN RB THERE IS AN OVERLAP. THE THUMB IS DOWN BECAUSE THE BOATS ARE OVERLAPPED. JIM: THESE PICTURES ARE VERY REMINISCENT OF FREE MANTLE, WHETHER THE 12-METERS, WERE SLASHING THROUGH THE INDIAN OCEAN DAY AFTER DAY. 3:25 UNTIL THE START OF AMERICA’S CUP. GARY: BOTH BOATS VERY EARLY FOR THE LINE. IL MORO WILL USE THE WIND OFF HER SAILS TO BLOCK AMERICA 3’S WIND TO TRY AND SLOW THE BOAT DOWN SO THEY DON’T JUMP THE BOAT EARLY. JIM: THAT’S THE BOWMAN, GARY KIRBY, A FORMER HOCKEY PLAYER. GARY: AMERICA 3 IS IN THE FAVORED POSITION HERE. ITALY WILL HAVE TROUBLE. THEY WILL HAVE TO GO OVER THE SPECTATOR FLEET. JIM: THOSE OTHER MOTOR BOATS OUT THERE ARE JUDGING BOATS IN CASE THERE IS AN INFRACTION. ON THE WATER JUDGING BEING USED IN THIS AMERICA’S CUP FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. THE MAN COUNTING DOWN IS BILL KOCH. $65 MILLION OF HIS OWN MONEY. THE MOST EXPENSIVE CLOCKER IN SPORTS HISTORY. JIM: THESE TWO TEAMS HAVE NEVER RACED AGAINST EACH OTHER IN THE AMERICA’S CUP COMPETITION. THEY AREN’T SURE WHAT TO EXPECT. PETER: MAST TO BEAM IS WHAT PAUL CAYARD IS USINGIS ARM TO WAVE. IT MEANS AMERICA 3 CANNOT ALTER COURSE TO PUSH HIM OVER THE LINE. WE MAY SEE A PROTEST SITUATION HERE. THE UMPIRES ARE IN POSITION TO MAKE A RULING. PETER: IT LOOKS LIKE BOTH BOATS ARE ON THE LINE NOW. CAYARD MUST LIKE THE BUEY END, BECAUSE HE HAS SHIFTED OVER IN THAT POSITION. PETER: BOTH BOATS TWO BOAT LENGTHS OVER THE LINE. THEY WILL HAVE TO WORK TO GET BACK. IT TAKES ALMOST 40 SECONDS IN THIS WIND STRENGTH TO ACCELERATE TO FULL SPEED. IL MORO SAILING ABOUT TWO KNOTS FASTER THAN AMERICA 3. PETER: NOTICE HOW MUCH FASTER IL MORO CAN TURN THAN AMERICA 3. WE HAVE SEEN THIS THROUGHOUT THE PRESTART. GARY: AN INDICATION THAT AMERICA 3 IS A HEAVIER BOAT AND POSSIBLY A LITTLE LONGER. JIM: 50 SECONDS UNTIL THE START OF RACE ONE FOR THE 1992 AMERICA’S CUP. THE RED-HULD BOAT, THE CHALLENGING BOAT FOR ITALY, IL MORO DI VENEZIA, THE WHITE HULL BELONGS TO AMERICA 3, BILL KOCH AND BUDDY MELGES. 30 SECONDS TO THE START. THAT’S PAUL CAYARD AT THE WHEEL FOR IL MORO. THEY LOOK TO GO TO OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE LINE. ARE YOU SURPRISED? PETER: AN EVEN START OFF THE STARTING LINE. IT WILL DETERMINE WHICH SIDE OF THE COURSE IS FAVORITE, THE LEFT IL MORO, THE RIGHT AMERICA 3. PETER: ITALY OVER EARLY. JIM: THAT MEANS THEY WILL HAVE TO GO TO THE START LINE. LOSING PRECIOUS TIME AND CONDITIONS. MAJOR MISTAKE. THEY HAVE TO GO ACROSS THE LINE AGAIN. YOU CAN HEAR ON BOARD ALMOST A PANIC SITUATION. GARY: THERE IS NO REASON TO GO OVER. IT WAS AN UNFORCED ERROR. HE DIDN’T NEED TO DO IT. HE WILL BE ABOUT FIVE BOAT LENGTHS BEHIND WITH AMERICA 3 TAKING THE LEAD AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN. WOW. JIM: SO THE WHITE BOAT, U.S.A. 23, ON STAR BOARD TACK, THE WIND COMING OVER THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BOAT, THE CHALLENGING BOAT, THE RED HULL FROM ITALY. AMERICA’S CUP AND THE ADVANTAGE GOES TO MELGES. MELGES TAKING OVER THE WHEEL AND ITALY HAD TO GO BACK AFTER CROSSING THE LINE EARLY. AS THE CLOCK COUNTED DOWN TO 15 SECONDS, LET’S GO BACK AND LOOK AT THAT MISTAKE. GARY: PAUL CAYARD AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN IS CLEARLY OVER THE LINE. THERE IS THE GUN. HIS BOAT WIDTH, ABOUT 16 FEET OVER THE LINE. HE COMES UP AND CAN’T SEE THAT HE IS OVER. THE COMMITTEE BOAT NOW SIGNALS A FLAG. THE NAVIGATOR NOTICES IT. THEY TURN BACK AND GO TO RESTART. THE MAJOR MISTAKE THAT DID NOT NEED TO BE MADE BECAUSE THEY WERE ON TRACK FOR A GOOD START. JIM: SO AMERICA 3 TAKES AN EARLY LEAD, BUT THERE IS A LONG WAY TO GO. THREE MILES MORE ON THIS FIRST MARK. AND THEN SEVEN MORE LEGS. THIS SPECIAL EDITION OF ABC’S WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS CONTINUES AFTER THIS. BOAT LENGTH LEAD OVER IL MORO. AND PAUL CAYARD PERHAPS A LITTLE BIT AGGRESSIVE AT THE START. HE CAME OVER THE STARTING LINE. HOW ABOUT IT, JIM? WHAT DO YOU THINK? JIM: NO QUESTION HE MADE A MISTAKE BUT IT WASN’T JUST PAUL CAYARD. THE REST OF THE AFTERGUARD HAS TO BEAR RESPONSIBILITY. THE CHIEFFI BROTHERS AND THE BOWMAN. A TEAM EFFORT. GARY: EVERYBODY WATCHES VERY CAREFULLY. THERE IS FOUR DIFFERENT PEOPLE THAT CALL THE LINE. THE WHOLE TEAM JUST A LITTLE BIT TOO JUMPY, AGGRESSIVE AS FRANK POINTED OUT. AS A RESULT, AMERICA 3 ON THE LEFT ENJOYS A FIVE BOAT LENGTH LEAD. A TREMENDOUS JOB BY AMERICA 3 STAYING COOL AND CAYARD, TOO AGGRESSIVE, AND PAYING THE PRICE. JIM: THE BOATS ARE BACK IN PHASE. BOTH OF THEM ARE ON PORT TACK. THE WIND COMING OVER FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BOAT. PAUL CAYARD TAX OVER TO STARBOARD. GARY: THE WHOLE IDEA IN MATCHING RACING IS A MANEUVER CALLED COVERING. THAT’S WHEN YOU ARE THE LEADING BOAT LIKE AMERICA 3, THEY ARE AHEAD. WHAT YOU TRY AND DO IS POSITION YOURSELF TO STAY BETWEEN THE MARK THEY ARE HEADING FOR TO STAY BETWEEN THAT MARK AND THE WIND AND THE OPPONENT THEY ARE RACING AGAINST. SO CAYARD THE RED BOOT ON THE RIGHT NOW MANEUVERS, TURNS HIS BOAT TO TACK AWAY, CLEAR HIS WIND. YOU TRY TO BLOCK THE WIND OF THE TRAILING BOAT, WHEN YOU ARE BEHIND YOU TRY TO ENGAGE IN A TACKING DUAL TO KEEP YOUR WIND FROM BEING BLOCKED. JIM: WE CAN SHOW I ON SAILTRACK. THAT’S WHAT ALL THE BOBBING AND WEAVING AND CRISSCROSSING. THAT’S THE TACKING DUAL GARY TALKED ABOUT. THAT HAS BEGUN. GREAT CONDITIONS. ON THIS FIRST LEG, WE HAVE SEEN AS MANY AS 25 TACKS. GARY: IL MORO GAINED A LOT CIRCLING DURING THE START THERE IS AN INDICATION SHE MIGHT BE BETTER MANEUVERING. PAUL CAYARD IS WISE TO USE THE STRATEGY OF MANEUVERING A LOT BECAUSE HE MIGHT BE ABLE TO CATCH UP. PETER: CAYARD IS REALLY INITIATING THE TACK DID DUEL BY TACKING TOWARD AMERICA 3 ON THAT FIRST CROSS. THEY FEEL THERE IS MORE BREEZE AND MORE WIND VELOCITY ON THE RIGHT SIZE OF THE COURSE. THAT’S WHAT THE WEATHER FORECASTERS HAVE BEEN FAVORING ALL DAY. A TRICKY BALANCE WHETHER TO GO FOR WIND OR COVER. BUT IN A MATCH RACE, THE BETTER PHILOSOPHY IS TO STAY WITH YOUR OPPONENT, BLOCK THEIR WIND, AND COVER AS OPPOSED TO SPLIT. RIGHT NOW, AMERICA 3 IS SPLITTING. GARY: WHAT WE SEE SAY HEAD OF AMERICA 3 BY 150 YARDS IS A LINE OF MORE WIND VELOCITY ABOUT FOUR KNOTS, MORE WIND AND THEY MAY BE EXTENDING TO GET TO THAT INCREASED VELOCITY, MORE HORSEPOWER IN THEIR SAILS. PAUL CAYARD, IF HE SEES MORE WIND, COVER FROM BEHIND AND SAY WE ARE FIVE BOAT LENGTHS BEHIND NOW. IF WE SPLIT AND DON’T GET INTO THAT NEW WIND WE WILL BE FURTHER BEHIND. THEY MIGHT WANT TO TRY AND STAY. BUT SO FAR THEY ARE ELECTING TO KEEP GOING FOR THIS SIDE OF THE COURSE. JIM: THE CUBANS AS THEY ARE CALLED. JIM: THERE IS FIRE WATER, THE TENDER THAT BELONGS TO AMERICA 3. THAT’S WHERE ALL THE COMPUTER FOLKS, DESIGNERS, AND FRONT OFFICE PEOPLE ARE WATCHING. AND ROOTING. GARY: IT LOOKS LIKE AMERICA 3 MADE THE RIGHT STRATEGY HEADING TOWARD THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE COURSE, PICKING UP MORE WIND AND EXTENDING THEIR LEAD. PETER: I WOULDN’T BE SURPRISED TO SEE THEM USE THAT ADVANTAGE. THERE THEY ARE TACKING ON TOP OF IL MORO. IL MORO TO THE UNFAVORED LEFT SIDE OF THE COURSE. 689 FROM YOUR POSITION, HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO SEE ANY DIFFERENCE IN BOAT SPEED BETWEEN THESE TWO BOATS? PETER: THEY ARE ONLY LINED UP FOR A BRIEF TWO-MINUTE PERIOD OFF THE STARTING LINE AFTER IL MORO RESTARTED. IT APPEARED TO ME THEY ARE QUITE SEPARATED. SO IT COULD HAVE BEEN WIND VELOCITY. IT APPEARED AMERICA 3 WAS SAILING BETTER ON THIS UPWIND LEG. JIM: THEY CONTINUE ON THAT FIRST BEAT GOING WIND WARD THREE AND A QUARTER MILES. RACE ONE OF AMERICA’S CUP. AND WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS WILL CONTINUE AFTER THIS MESSAGE AND A WORD FROM YOUR JIM: LIVE IN THE PACIFIC. RACE ONE. WE ARE GOING UPWIND. THE FIRST MARK. A LONG WAY TO GO. THIS IS THE LONGEST LEG ON THE BRAND NEW AMERICA’S CUP RACE COURSE. THESE BOATS ARE 10 FEET LONGER THAN THE 12-METERS YOU SAW IN FREMANTLE. WIDER. MORE SAIL AREA. THE FIRST TIME THEY HAVE BEEN USED IN AMERICA’S CUP COMPETITION. GARY, REMEMBER IN THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, WE HAD CARNAGE OUT ON THE WATER. A MAST SNAPPED LIKE A TOOTH PICK. THAT WAS $750,000. GARY: THESE TEAMS HAVE LEARNED THAT EQUIPMENT DOES BREAK AND THINGS ARE STRONGER. THE TACKING DUAL IS CONTINUING. TO MY EYE, IT LOOKS LIKE AMERICA 3 MAY HAVE GAINED A BOAT LENGTH, A BOAT LENGTH AND A HALF SINCE THE START. MAYBE A SIX BOAT LENGTH LEAD NOW. JIM: AMERICA 3 TACKING. THAT’S THE STARBOARD TURNER. COMPUTERIZED GRAPHICS ON BOARD. WHAT WE HAVE ARE COMPUTER SIGNALS BEING SENT FROM BOTH BOATS TO ACCURATELY REFLECT THE TACKING DUAL THAT’S GOING ON. HALFWAY TO THAT TOP MARK, YOU CAN HEAR BILL KOCH. HE IS REMINDING BUDDY, IT LOOKS LIKE WE GAINED A LITTLE ON THAT TACK. PETER: HE IS LOOKING AHEAD. MUCH DARKER WHERE AMERICA 3 IS HEADING. MORE WIND ON THE WATER. THEY WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE COURSE PAY FOR THEM. GARY: AT THIS POINT IN THE RACE ALL THE NERVOUS BUTTERFLIES ARE LONG GONE IN THE STOMACH. EVERYBODY IS CONCENTRATING ON THE SITUATION AT HAND, CONCENTRATING ON SPEED. A VERY LUMPY, CHOPPY SEAS. THE WIN DIRECTION THAT WE HAVEN’T SEEN IN QUITE A LONG TIME. THE WIND ALMOST OUT OF THE SOUTH. JIM: YOU ARE LOOKING DOWN AT THE MEN OF IL MORO. THE CHALLENGERS HAD TO ANNOUNCE THEIR BOAT WAY BACK IN JANUARY. THIS IS BOAT NUMBER FIVE. ONCE THEY ANNOUNCED THAT BOAT THEY COULD NOT SUBSTITUTE ANY OF THE PREVIOUS FOUR. THE DEFENDERS DID NOT HAVE TO PICK UNTIL THE DAY BEFORE THIS BEST-OF-SEVEN SERIES. BILL KOCH AND HIS TWO DESIGN TEAMS HAD TWO EXTRA MONTHS TO DESIGN, REFINE, AND THEY TOOK ADVANTAGE OF IT. 689 A LOT OF WORK MAKING THOSE DESIGN CHANGES. IT IS CLEAR THAT BILL KOCH’S DESIGN TEAM IS ON TRACK, BECAUSE EVERY TIME THEY MAKE A CHANGE, THEY HAVE MADE PROGRESS AND THEY ARE SAILING WITH A NEW KEEL HERE THIS WEEK THAT THEY HAVEN’T USED BEFORE. SO FAR IT IS PROVING TO BE FAST. JIM: PAUL CAYARD SAID A LOT OF THE DESIGN IDEAS IN AMERICA 3 CAME OF THEIR OBSERVATIONS OF THE CHALLENGER FINALS BETWEEN ITALY AND THE KIWIS. HE ADMITTED AMERICA 3 IS FASTER. GARY: IF YOU GOING AGAINST A FASTER BOAT, JUMPING THE GUN AT THE START IS NOT A GOOD WAY TO GET THE RACE GOING. PETER: THE WIND PICKED UP AT LEAST FOUR KNOTS SINCE THE START OF THE RACE. WE HAVE ABOUT 14 KNOTS OF WIND VELOCITY. IT APPEARS TO BE INCREASING SOME MORE NOW. JIM: WE SHOULD POINT OUT TO FOLKS WATCHING AT HOME, THESE TWO BOATS HAVE NEVER MET BEFORE. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME. THE DEFENDERS HAD THEIR ELIMINATION SERIES, THE CHALLENGERS HAD THEIRS, THEY NEVER RACED AGAINST EACH OTHER, NEVER BEEN ON THE SAME RACE COURSE TOGETHER, NEVER GONE SIDE-BY-SIDE IN THE SAME CONDITIONS. THIS IS THE FIRST MEETING EVER. BILL KOCH NAMED HIS FOURTH BOAT KANZA AFTER A KANZA WIND DRIVE. HE LOOKED FOR ANY ADVANTAGE HE COULD. HE EVEN CALLED IN A MEDICINE MAN. >>WE HAD A PRIEST COME IN FROM A SUPER BOWL TEAM OF THE STEELERS WHO GAVE US AN IRISH BLESSING. WE HAVE OUR AMERICAN INDIAN BLESSING FOR TODAY, WHICH TAKES CARE OF MOTHER EARTH, AND BUDDY HAS HIS — TAKES CARE OF MOTHER EARTH FOR THE WIND. AND BUDDY HAS HIS CORN BLESSING. I MUST ADMIT, WHILE I TOLD THE CREW THIS MORNING, WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY, WE HAVE WORKED VERY HARD, WE HAVE HAD OUR UPS AND DOWNS, THERE ISN’T MUCH TO SAY TODAY, BUT THIS IS ALL WHAT WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR. JIM: PETER WHEN YOU SAILED WITH STARS & STRIPES, YOU HAD GARLIC, YOU HAD A MEN PEN ANY IN THE MAST? PETER: A LOT OF SUPERSTITION WHEN YOU GET TO THIS LEVEL. PAUL CAYARD, HE HAD HIS LUCKY HAT ON. EVERYBODY ON BOARD BOTH BOATS HAS AT LEAST THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT MAKES THE BOAT GO FASTER AND ANY LITTLE THING THAT CAN HELP. JIM: GARY JOBSON, YOU SAILED WITH TED TURNER ABOARD COURAGEOUS. WHRA SUPERSTITIONS DID YOU HAVE? GARY: TED HAS AN ENGINEER’S CAP. WE BOUGHT 20 OF THEM SO WE HAD PLENTY ON BOARD SO WE COULD GET AROUND THE COURSE SAFELY SO IT WORKED OUT. JIM: YOU ARE HEARING TERMS THAT ARE MAYBE NOT TOO FAMILIAR LIKE PORT, STARBOARD, SPIN KERR, GENOA, AND WE HOPE TO MAKE NOFIES SAILORS OUT AFTER FEW FOLKS. THE STARBOARD TACK BOAT. THE BOAT WITH THE WIND COMING OVER ITS RIGHT SIDE ALWAYS HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY OVER THE BOAT ON THE BEST, THE PORT TACK BOAT OR THE WIND COMING OVER ITS LEFT SIDE. IN THIS EXAMPLE, PORT TACK IL MORO HAS TO STEER CLEAR OF THE STARBOARD TACK FRENCH BOAT. SKIPPER PAUL CAYARD DECIDES TO DUCK CLOSELY BEHIND. HE CUTS IT CLOSE TRYING NOT TO GIVE UP TOO MUCH SPEED OR DISTANCE. JIM: THE AMERICA’S CUP. DENNIS CONNER CALLS IT A GAME OF LIFE. PAUL CAYARD, HOPING IN 10 DAYS TO CALL IT VICTORY. WE ARE BACK LIVE IN THE PACIFIC. OUR SAILING TEAM WELCOMES YOU TO RACE ONE OF THE 1992 AMERICA’S CUP, THE RED HULL BELONGS TO THE MEN OF IL MORO DI VENEZIA. RAUL GARDINI, THE ALLEGED BUDGET, WHATEVER IT TAKES, HE HAS POORED IN OVER $100 MILLION. BILL KOCH, $65 MILLION. GARY: A PROBLEM ON THE JIB ON THE IL MORO, THEFR AN OVERRIDE ON THE JIB, AND THEY ARE HAVING TROUBLE TRIMMING IT IN. A SET BACK FOR IL MORO. AMERICA 3 TAX TACKS TO GET BETWEEN THEM AND A FURTHER SET BACK FOR THE ITALIANS. AN OVERRIDE SOUNDS LIKE A TECHNICAL TERM. THERE IS A ROPE COMING OFF THAT SAIL AROUND A WINCH. YOU GRIND THAT WINCH AND TURN HANDLES TO PULL THE SAIL IN. IT GOT TWISTED WHEN THEY WERE PULLING IT IN SO IT WAS A MISTAKE BY THE CREW. IT WAS ON THE PORT SIDE THAT THE SAIL HAPPENED. JIM: PRIOR TO THAT ERROR IT LOOKED LIKE THE CHALLENGING BOAT WAS CATCHING UP. PETER: I THINK SO. THEY LOOK TO BE ABOUT THREE AND A HALF BOAT LENGTHS BEHIND AMERICA 3. ALL 8Y LONG WE HAVE BEEN COMMENTING ON HOW SLOPPY THE ITALIAN CREW HAS LOOKED IN THE TACKS AND THAT’S THE WORST ONE WE HAVE SEEN YET. 689 IT HURTS PAUL CAYARD WHEN YOU HAVE A MISTAKE, BECAUSE YOU START LOSING CONFIDENCE IN YOUR CREW. HIS BOWMAN AND HE MADE A MISTAKE JUMPING THE LINE, NOW ONE OF THE SAIL TRIMERS MADE A MISTAKE AND YOUR CONFIDENCE STARTS SLIPPING AWAY WHEN YOU HAVE THESE KIND OF PROBLEMS. EVERYTHING CALM ON THE WHITE BOAT. BOAT THREE OFFER THE BILL KOCH ASSEMBLY LINE. THEY CONTINUE TO HEAD TOWARD THE LAY LINE. GARY: THE BUOY IS 600 FEET DEEP. IT IS THIS TRIANGULAR RUBBER BUOY THAT YOU SEE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN. YOU ROUND THAT MARK ON THE LEFT SIDE OR PORT SIDE AND HEAD BACK DOWN TO THE SECOND MARK WHICH IS RIGHT BY THE STARTING LINE. JIM: COMPUTERIZED COLOR GRAPHICS. THIS IS NOT A CARTOON NOW. YOU CAN SEE THE BOATS HEADING DOWN TO THE LAY LINE. THEY WILL HAVE TO MAKE A TACK. THERE IS THE TACKING DUEL THAT HAD ENSUED. THESE ARE COMPUTER GRAPHICS ACCURATELY REPRESENTING WHERE THE BOATS ARE ON THE COURSE. WE HAVE COMPUTERS ON ALL THOSE BOATS. GARY: A SIGNAL GETS SENT UP TO A SATELLITE, A GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM, AND THAT’S HOW WE ARE ABLE TO GET THAT SIGNAL OFF THE BOAT EVERY THREE SECONDS. JIM: INTERESTING. I THINK SOMEBODY CRACKED INTO THE SECURITY. PRICE WATER HOUSE WAS NOT HERE. LOOKED AT THE NUMBERS AND PLAYED THIS AMERICA’S CUP SCENARIO ON THEIR COMPUTER. AMERICA 3 IS ALLEGED TO BE OVER A MINUTE FASTER ON THE RACE COURSE. GARY: EXCEPT DEPOR THE MISTAKE BY THE START BY PAUL CAYARD AND ONE BAD MANEUVER BY THE CROWD, THE ITALIAN BOAT SEEMS TO BE EVEN SPEEDWISE WITH AMERICA 3 IN CONDITIONS THAT SHOULD BE FAVORING THE AMERICAN BOAT. BOTH BOATS NOW HEADING DIRECTLY FOR THE MARK. THAT’S THE ORANGE BUOY THAT YOU CAN SEE RIGHT THERE WITH A FEW RACE OFFICIALS NEARBY. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HIT THIS BUOY WHEN YOU ARE AROUND IT. IF YOU DO, YOU HAVE TO MAKE A PENALTY TURN LATER IN THE COURSE. RIGHT NOW, AMERICA 3 ENJOYING ABOUT A SIX BOAT LENGTH LEAD. A NICE JOB. PETER: ONCE AGAIN WE HAVE A CHANCE TO SEE THE TWO BOATS SAILING IN A STRAIGHT LINE WITHOUT A LOT OF TACKS THERE. AMERICA 3, ONCE AGAIN, LOOKED TO BE FASTER IN A STRAIGHT LINE. GARY: WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS GETTING READY TO SET ANOTHER SAIL AFTER PASSING THE MARK. THAT BLACK POLE THAT YOU SEE THERE IS CALLED THE SPINNAKER POLE. THE BOWMAN, JERY KIRBY IS SETTING IT UP ALONG WITH PAUL HENRY TO GET THAT POLE WHICH EXTENDS ABOUT 10 FEET BEYOND THE BOW OF THE BOAT. WHEN THEY SAIL WITH THE WIND, THEY HAVE A DIFFERENT KIND OF SAIL. LIKE WHEN YOU PLAY GOLF, YOU USE DIFFERENT CLUPS FOR DIFFERENT SHOTS, HEAR YOU HAVE DIFFERENT SAILS FOR DIFFERENT COURSES THAT YOU WILL BE SAILING ON. JIM: JOHN EXPENSE, IN THE SEWER, POPPING UP. HE TOOK 10 STITCHES ON HIS HAND WHEN THEY HAD A KAMIKAZE TAKEDOWN THERE. THAT’S WHEN THE GRINDERS PULLED OUT THEIR POCKET KNIFES AND CUT SOME OF THE SHEETS FREE. AND THE BOWMAN WITH THE HARNESS THERE. GARY: THESE MEN HAVE BEEN THROUGH THIS MANEUVER HUNDREDS OF TIMES. YOU WANT THE SAIL DRAWN AS PETER: GARY: PENALTY ON AMERICA 3. THEY HAD TO ALTER COURSE OR THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A COLLISION. THE ITALIANS, POOR TACK, OBLIGATED TO STAY CLEAR. AMERICA 3 WILL GET MORE DISTANCE ON THAT MANEUVER. JIM: BEARING OFF TO CHANGE YOUR CURRENT COURSE AWAY FROM THE WIND. THE BOWMAN ABOARD IL MORO, THE SPINNAKER IS OUT, WE ARE ON LEG NUMBER TWO, AMERICA 3 IN FRONT, THE DEFENDING YACHT, REPRESENTING THE SAN DIEGO YACHT CLUB. THE RED HULD BOAT, THE CHALLENGING BOAT FOR ITALY, IL MORO. ITALY IS TRAILING BY OVER HALF A MINUTE. THE AMERICA’S CUP COVERAGE. FRANK: AFTER THE FIRST MARK, IT IS AMERICA 3 WITH A 31 SECOND LEAD OVER IL MORO. IL MORO WITH THAT AGGRESSIVE MIAKE AT THE START. LOST FIVE BOAT LENGTHS. THAT’S ABOUT WHAT IT IS RIGHT NOW. JOINING US, JACK WHITAKER WHO HAS COVERED AMERICA’S CUP RACING FOR MANY TIMES. FREMANTLE AUSTRALIA, I RECALL WELL. BUT TWO CONTRASTING STYLES BY THE TWO SKIPPERS, TWO DISTINCT DIFFERENT CHARACTERS. JACK: ABSOLUTELY. BUDDY MELGES IS JUST ABOUT 30 YEARS OLDER THAN HIS OPPOSITE NUMBER, PAUL CAYARD, ON IL MORO. BUDDY WAS BORN HUNDREDS OF MILES FROM THE TASTES AND SMELL OF THE SEA. BUT HE IS A COMPLETE SAILOR. HE HAS WON IN EVERYTHING FROM ICE BOATS TO OLYMPIC COMPETITION. AND INDEED, IF HE SHOULD WIN THE AMERICA’S CUP, HE WILL BECOME THE FIRST SAILOR EVER TO WIN A GOLD IN THE OLYMPICS AND THE AMERICA’S CUP. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ENJOY THE HUMAN ELEMENT IN SPORT, BUDDY IS YOUR MAN. HE ACCEPTS AND USES THE NEW TECHNOLOGY, BUT IN THE END, HE TRUSTS HIS INSTINCTS, AS ALL GOOD SAILORS DO. PAUL CAYARD, UNLIKE BUDDY, IS IN COMPLETE CHARGE OF IL MORO. AND AFTER BEATING NEW ZEALAND IN A BRILLIANT COME FROM BEHIND EFFORT LAST WEEK HIS STATURE HAS INCREASED IMMENSELY. WIN OR LOSE HERE, PAUL CAYARD IS A NEW SUPERSTAR IN YACHTING. HE HAS BEEN CRITICIZED BECAUSE HE IS AN AMERICAN WORKING FOR THE TALTIANS. BUT THAT’S A BASELESS AND EMPTY CHARGE AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF AMERICAN CUP COMPETITION. SO THE DUEL BETWEEN THESE TWO COMPETENT MEN IS ON. THEY BOTH USE THE NEW TECHNOLOGY AND APPRECIATE IT BUT IN THE END THEY WILL TRUST WHAT EVERY SAILOR HAS TRUSTED FROM ULLSYLES TO THE OLD MAN ON THE BOAT, WIND IN YOUR FACES AND BOAT ON THE WATER. IT WILL BE GOOD STUFF. JIM: THE FIRST HIRED GUN WAS CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS 500 YEARS AGO, AN ITALIAN, AND WENT SAILING FOR SPAIN. PAUL CAYARD, GREW UP IN THE SAN FRANCISCO AREA, SPEAKS THREE LANGUAGES FLUENTLY, ITALIAN, FRENCH, ENGLISH, OF COURSE. HIS WIFE IS SWEDISH. SHE CELEBRATED A BIRTHDAY THAT THE MEN FROM IL MORO ACTUALLY CLEN CHD THE LOUIS VUITTON CUP AND THERE ARE THOSE THAT SAY PAUL CAYARD ACTUALLY BEAT THE KIWIS AS MUCH OFF THE WATER AS ON WHEN HE BEAT THEM DOWN IN THE PROTEST ROOM OVER THE BOWSPRIT ISSUE. GARY: A CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE THAT WENT ON IN SAN DIEGO. PAUL WAS VERY TOUGH IN THAT, DID A GOOD JOB. AMERICA 3 AND IL MORO HAVE GONE THROUGH A JIBE. YOU CAN SEE BILL KOCH ON THE LEFT, AND BUDDY STEERING THE BOAT. BILL WEARS THE ONBOARD MICROPHONE SO WE CAN HEAR HIM FROM TIME TO TIME TALKING. JIM: BILL KOCH WITH HIS PETRO DOLLARS, HE SAYS THE BATTLE IS WON AND LOST IN THE EYES OF THE COMMANDER AND SAYS WE CAN LOSE THERE IF WE GET CAUGHT UP IN SELF DOUBT. WE NEED THE CONFIDENCE IN OURSELVES AND OUR PEOPLE AND IN OUR BOATS. $65 MILLION FROM THIS MAN OUT OF M.I.T., PETRO DOLLARS FROM OIL. ART IMITATES LIFE. BUT THROUGH BILL KOCH’S EYES, ART SEEMS TO REFLECT LIGHT. COLLECTING VALUABLE POSSESSIONS HAVE BEEN HIS PASSION AND HIS NEXT OBJECT OF DESIRE, YACHTING’S HOLY GRAIL. >>I’M HERE BECAUSE I LOVE THE SPORT OF SAILING. I LOVE THE TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT. I’M HERE BECAUSE I LOVE THE CAMARADERIE OF THE CREW. I LOVE PUTTING TOGETHER A GREAT TEAM. THAT’S WHAT I REALLY LOVE DOING. AND MOST OF ALL, I LOVE WINNING IN A CERTAIN STYLE. JIM: THAT CERTAIN STYLE MAY BE THIS MAN’S TRADEMARK. HE BURST ON THE SAILING WITH THE MAXIES, WITH HIS BOAT MATADOR. THAT GAVE HIM COURAGE. IT BEGAN WITH NFL STYLE MINI CAMPS IN 11 AND BUDDY MELGES ADDED EXPERIENCE AT THE HELM. GEARED UP FOR THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, THEY FACED DISAPPOINTMENT, A SIX PLACE FINISH DUE TO STRUCTURAL FAILURES. >>I THINK THE GUYS THAT MADE UP THE RULE TO DESIGN THESE BOATS ARE IDIOTS. AND I THINK THEY DID IT FOR THEIR OWN PERSONAL BENEFIT AND NOT FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE GUYS WHO HAVE TO SAIL THEM. THESE BOATS ARE INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. JIM: DANGER BECAME AMERICA P’S BUSINESS. KOCH’S DEEP POCKETS SHED $65 MILLION. MONEY IN TECHNOLOGY RULED OUT THREE MORE A.C. CLASS YACHTS. DENNIS CONNER HAD TWO BOATS ENTERED IN THE DEFENDER TRIALS. HIS DREAM WAS IN SIGHT. HIS TECHNOLOGICAL EDGE DID NOT GO UNCONTESTED. OTHER SYNDICATES QUESTIONED HIS ETHICS CLAIMING KOCH’S SPYING TACTICS CHRIS ROSSED THE LINES OF SPORTSMANSHIP. THEY ARGUED AGAINST HIS SOPHISTICATED RESEARCH, ON, BELOW, AND ABOVE THE WATER. >>THEY ARE DOING A LOT OF THINGS THAT ARE AB NORMAL TO OUR SPORT. WHEN CONFRONTED ABOUT THE ISSUES, THEY PRETTY MUCH DENY IT. YOU CAN ASK THEM IF THEY ARE USING LACEERS OR IF THEY ARE USING ALL THESE DEVICES IF THEY HAVE STUFF UP ON THE HILL, POINT LOMA, AND THEY WILL DENY IT. JIM: WHAT’S ALL THIS EQUIPMENT YOU GOT? >>IS IT ANY OF YOUR BUSINESS?>>THE MESH’S CUP IS NOT WORTH GOING TO JAIL FOR AND DOING ILLEGAL THINGS FOR. BUT AS A PRUDENT BUSINESSMAN AND PERSON, YOU WANT TO GO OUT AND GATHER AS MUCH INFORMATION AS YOU CAN THAT’S LEGAL AND ETHICAL. JIM: KOCH COULD NOT DISPENSE WITH DENNIS EASILY. AN UNSUNNYABLE LACK OF WIND AND THE EXPERTISE OF CONNER AND HIS CREW DID NOT ALOY A SWEEP. IN THE END THE FINAL GUN WENT TO TEAM WORK, TALENT, TECHNOLOGY AND MONEY. AMERICA 3. >>THE KANSAS INDIANS HAVE A SAYING THAT THE GREATNESS OF YOUR TRIBE IS DETERMINED BY THE GREATNESS OF YOUR ENEMY. WE THINK DENNIS CONNER IS PROBABLY THE GREATEST SAILOR THAT’S EVER BEEN. JIM: WITH A VICTORY OVER THE GREATEST, FOUR VICTORIES IS ALL THAT SEPARATES BILL KOCH FROM TASTING AMERICA’S CUP SUCCESS. WILLIAM INGRAHAM KOCH. HE DOES NOT BELIEVE IN THE WORD “CAN’T” AND HE PUT HIS MONEY, $65 MILLION, WHERE HIS MOUTH AND VISION WAS. THE ONLY THINGS YOU FIND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD ARE YELLOW LINES AND DEAD SKUFRNGS. HIS BOAT IN THE LEAD. IEW JIM: MOMENTS AGO AT THE SAN DIEGO YACHT CLUB. FOLKS ARE ROOTING. THEY WOULD LIKE TO KEEP THE OLDEST TROPHY IN SPORTS RIGHT THERE, WATCHING BILL KOCH AND HIS AMERICA 3 CREW. THEY HAVE DONE AN OUTSTANDING CREW. THERE IS PETER CRAIG, THE MASTMAN, FATHER RECOVERING FROM SURGERY IN MASSACHUSETTS. HIS FATHER WATCHING. SPEEDY RECOVERY. ANXIOUS TO GET BACK AND SAILING HIS BOAT DOWN IN THE BAHAMAS. PETER, HOW IS IL MORO DOING ON THE RUN WITH THE SPINNAKERS OUT? PETER: AMERICA 3 HAS OPENED UP MAYBE ANOTHER TWO, THREE BOAT LENGTHS. THAT’S ABOUT 15 SECONDS OF TIME ON THIS DOWNWIND LEG. THE DIFFERENCE, STRAIGHT LINE BOAT SPEED. JIM: THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE, PETER, TO SOME OF OUR NOFIESS WATCHING BETWEEN A GENERAL KERR AND A GENNIKER? PETER: THE SPINNAKER SAILS, THEY ARE SMET RICKAL. FUR BOLD THEM IN HALF THE EDGES WOULD TOUCH. IN THE LIGHTER WINDS WE WILL SEE THESE BOATS USING GENNIKERS. THE GENNIKER IS BETTER IN THE LIGHTER WIND. 689 THE ROUNDED SAIL ONLY WEIGHS A HALF OUNCE PER SQUARE YARD. IT IS MADE OUT OFYLON. EFFECTIVE GOING DOWNWIND. YOU CAN SEE IT BOBBLE IN THE WAVES. WHEN YOU SET A SAIL, YOU MAKE IT AS ROUND AS POSSIBLE AND STEADY IT DOWN SO IT ISN’T BOBBLEING AROUND TO GET EXTRA SPEED. AMERICA 3 SEEMS TO BE A LITTLE FASTER GOING DOWNWIND. THE SPEED OF THE BOAT, EVEN UPWIND, ACCOUNT FOR THE MISTAKE AT THE START AND A LITTLE BIT FASTER TO AMERICA 3 DOWNWIND. JIM: YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE SPINNAKER SAIL. GARY, I REMEMBER READING IN ONE OF YOUR NINE OR 10 BOOKS THAT SPINNAKERS ARE DIFFICULT TO FLY WHEN WET. WHY? GARY: YOU WANT THE SAIL DRY, LIGHTER, EASIER TO SAIL. AN WHEN THE SAILS ARE WET, THEY RIP EASIER, VERY BRITTLE TYPE SAILS. YOU TRY TO KEEP THEM DRY. WHEN THEY TAKE THEM DOWN, THE SAILTORS TAKE GREAT CARE TO GET THEM ON BOARD THE BOAT DOWN BELOW DECKS WITHOUT GETTING THEM WET AT ALL. JIM: IL MORO GOING AT 10 KNOTS. AMERICA 3 UNDER 10 KNOTS. WE HAVE OUR SAILTRACK. WE ARE HEADING FOR MARK TWO. DOWNWIND. PETER: WHEN THEY GO UPWIND THEY TACK BACK AND FORTH, SAME AS DOWNWIND. THE TWO BOATS ARE HEADING OFF IN THIS DIRECTION HERE. THEY WILL HAVE TO DO A MANEUVER CALLED A JIBE WHERE THEY ZIGZAG BACK AND FORTH TO GO TO THE SECOND MARK AND HEAD UP IN THIS DIRECTION. THAT’S CALLED JIBEING DOWN WIND. WE WILL SEE THOSE SEVERAL BEFORE THEY ROUND THE NEXT MARK. JIM: THE RADAR GUN. PAUL CAYARD WITH THE SUNGLASSES ON. THE CHIEFFI BROTHERS PART OF THE AFTERGUARD. ENRICO. GARY: ROBERT HOPKINS IS USING THAT LAISZER GUN TO AIM A SIGNAL AT THE OTHER BOAT AND SEE HOW FAR THEY ARE APART AND TELL WHETHER THEY ARE GAINING OR LOSING DISTANCE BY THE NUMBERS COMING OFF THE RAY GAR GUN. THE NUMBER HE IS GETTING IS NOT GOOD NEWS FOR IL MORO. AMERICA 3 CLEARLY GAINING. JIM: WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT SPYING, LONG A PART OF THE AMERICA’S CUP. IN FREMANTLE, THE SUBMARINE PENLIKE ATMOSPHERE AROUND AMERICA 2. HERE WE HAVE HAD DIVERS, THE KIWIS CAUGHT A DIVER OVER IN THEIR COMPOUND. WE IN DENNIS CONNER’S COMPOUND ONE DAY AROUND STARS AND STHRIPSE, AND THERE WAS A PHOTOGRAPHER WHO HAD AN UNDER UNDERWATER CAMERA TRYING TO GET A PICTURE OF THE KEEL. PAUL CAYARD SAID THE WIND R WINNER OF THE DEFENDER TRIALS WOULD BE GAZ IFLT NI, BILL KOCH’S SPY BOAT. BILL KOCH HAS ADMITTED PUBLICLY THAT HE HAS SPENT $2 MILLION IN THIS SYNDICATE’S CAMPAIGN ON SPYING. AND THAT’S AN AMAZING FIGURE. GARY: EIGHT YEARS AGO, THAT’S WHAT A WHOLE AMERICA’S CUP CAMPAIGN WOULD COST. AT THE TOP OF THE MAST, YOU WILL SEE THE ROD STICKING UP IN THE AIR WITH A FEATHERLIKE INSTRUMENT. THIS IS FIVE FEET ABOVE THE MAST. THE IDEA IS TO GIVE WEATHER INFORMATION, THE WIND SPEED AND THE WIND DIRECTION TO A COMPUTER DOWN BELOW ON DECKS. THE SELLERS USE THESE INSTRUMENTS TO DETERMINE WHAT SAILS TO SET. ONE OF THE QUESTIONS BEING ASKED RIGHT NOW AS THEY HAVE ABOUT A HALF MILE TO GO TO THE SECOND MARK, IS WHAT SAILS SHOULD THEY PUT UP FOR THE NEXT LEG GOING BACK TO WINDWARD. MAN, I TELL YOU, AMERICA 3 ON THE RIGHT REALLY GAINING HERE COMPARED TO THE IL MORO BOAT. JIM: SPINNAKERS AND GENNIKERS OUT. AND THEN WE HAVE WINDWARD NEXT. LOOK WHO ELSE IS WATCHING? THE UNITED STATES NAVY FOLLOWING THE AMERICA CUP RACE. THE SPECIAL EDITION OF WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS WILL CONTINUE AFTER THIS. JIM: BACK LIVE IN THE PACIFIC. IL MORO, ITA 25, THE MEN OF IL MORO DI VENEZIA, THEY ARE THE CHALLENGERS. THE AMERICAN ABOARD AMERICA 3, THEY ARE THE DEFENDERS REPRESENTING THE SAN DIEGO YACHT CLUB. THEY WOULD LIKE TO KEEP THE CUP THERE FOR ANOTHER THREE YEARS. IF IT GOES TO ITALY, BEST BET, VENICE. PETER, ANYTHING HAPPEN? PETER: AMERICA 3 SAILING ALMOST DIRECTLY FOR THE MARK. IL MORO TRIES TO SPLIT 40 DEGREES OFF COURSE. AMERICA 3 LOOKING FOR MORE WIND. BUT AMERICA 3 SAILING FASTER AND OPENING A NICE LEAD HERE ON THIS DOWNWARD LEG. GARY: YOU WILL NOTICE THE TWO BOATS ARE OPPOSITE JIBES HEADING FOR THE NEXT MARK WHICH IS CLEARLY ABOUT THREE MINUTES AWAY. WHAT YOU SEE IS HAPPENING AT THIS MOMENT AS WE LOOK AT THE SCREEN ON THE LEFT SIDE. JIM: A JIBE IS TURNING WHEN YOU ARE GOING DOWNWIND WITH THOSE HUGE BALLOON-LIKE SPINNAKERS OUT. THAT’S THE VOICE OF BILL KOCH. GARY: EVEN THOUGH CAYARD IS EIGHT BOAT LENGTHS BEHIND, HE CANNOT PANIC. HE HAS TO THINK ABOUT THE RACE HERE AND WHAT IS HE GOING TO DO NEXT. HE WILL REMEMBER THAT ON THE FIRST LEG, EVEN THOUGH HE JUMPED THE GUN AT THE START, HE WAS DOING A LOT OF MANEUVERING TACKING BACK AND FORTH. I SUSPECT ON THIS NEXT BEAT TO WINDWARD, WE WILL SEE A LOT OF MANEUVERING AND NOT STRAIGHT SPEED. JIM: THE BEAT BACK TO WINDWARD THE SECOND TIME ON THIS EIGHT-LEG COURSE. THEY ARE DOING A LITTLE KELP CLEANING. KE IS PART OF THE PROBLEM OFF OF SAB DAIG OWE. WE DID NOT HAVE THAT IN FREMANTLE, OF COURSE. GARY: THAT SEAWEED GETS STUCK. AND THAT LITTLE ROD HAS A KNIFE ON IT, A SHARP EDGE TO CUT THE KELP ON THE LEADING EDGE OF THE KEEL. GARY: NOW WHAT HAS TO HAPPEN, THEY HAVE TO PULL A NEW SAIL UP. THAT’S WHAT THE MEN IN THE BOW ARE WORKING TO GET THE SPINNAKER DOWN AND CHANGE COURSE 135 DEGREES. EVERYBODY IN ACTION AS THEY MAKE THIS TURN. PETER: AMERICA 3 WILL HAVE AN EASIER ROUNDING AS THEY ARE ALREADY ON PORT TACK. THEY WILL TURN TOWARDS THE WIND. THEY WILL NOT HAVE TO MAKE AN EXTRA JOG. JIM: THE CHUTE COMES DOWN, THE JIB GOES UP, AMERICA 3 WAS IN FRONT 35 SECONDS AT THE TOP MARK. BILL KOCH GOT HIT IN THE HEAD. GARY: WHEN THEY WERE GOING THROUGH THE JIBE, THAT’S THE BLACK HORIZONTAL SPAR THERE, CAME ACROSS AND HIT BILL RIGHT IN THE HEAD. HE SEEMS TO BE HURTING, JIM. GARY: HE IS SEEING STARS RIGHT NOW. JIM: BILL IS BACK WORKING ONE OF THE COFFEE GRINDERS. PETER: A NICE TAKEDOWN BY AMERICA 3. THEY HAVE MOST OF THE SAIL IN THE BOAST. PETER: LATE SPINNAKER TAKEDOWN BY IL MORO. THEY HAVE TROUBLE. JIM: 10 MORE SECONDS TACKED ON TO AMERICA 3’S ADVANTAGE. 41 SECONDS. MAJOR PROBLEMS ON IL MORO. 689 THEY WERE LATE GETTING THE SPINNAKER DOWN AND NOW THEY HAVE TO WRESTLE IT ON DECK. IT IS CAUSING MORE TIME AND DISTANCE. THE CREW IS JUST NOT AS SHARP. AND THE NEXT PROBLEM THE SAIL WILL BE ALL WET AND MORE DIFFICULT TO FLY THE NEXT TIME THEY CALL FOR THIS SAIL. JIM: 41 SECONDS, THE DELTA AROUND MARK NUMBER TWO. WE WILL GO TO THE TOP MARK AGAIN. WE GO ON A BEAT TO WINDWARD. THE DIFFERENCE RIGHT NOW HAS BEEN THE ERROR BY CAYARD GETTING OVER THE START LINE EARLY. JIM: THE RED HULL BELONGS TO ITA 25, IL MORO. THE WHITE HULL, U.S.A. 23, AMERICA 3. AMERICA 3 WITH A GOOD START. DAVE DELEN BOUGH DID HIS JOB. THE AFTERGUARD BY IL MORO EARLY. THEY HAD TO RESTART. WE ARE ON A BEAT BACK TO WINDWARD AGAIN. BILL KOCH RUBBING HIS HEAD HIT IN THE HEAD BY THE BOOM. HE TOLD THE CREW, FORGET THE ICE PACK. BUT HE HAS PUT SOME ICE UNDER HIS CAP. GARY: BILL HAS RECOVERED HERE BUT HE LOST HIS WAY THERE DURING THE JIBEING MANEUVER, GOT HIT IN THE HEAD WITH THE BOOM. THE BEST THING FOR HIM TO DO IS TO KEEP WORKING AND HE IS WORKING WITH THE RADAR GUN RIGHT NOW. HE WILL BE OK. JIM: THIS WAS A COUPLE SECONDS AFTER BILL GOT DENTED IN THE HEAD. LIKE A PRIZE FIGHTER. YOU CAN SEE HE STAGGERED THERE. GARY: IT LOOKS LIKE HE IS DOING BETTER NOW. BUT HE WILL BE SORE WHEN HE WAKES UP TOMORROW MORNING. JIM: WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM WITH THE SPINNAKER THERE ON IL MORO? PETER: THEY WERE TRYING TO PRESS AS HARD AS THEY COULD AND THEY WAITED FOR THE LAST MINUTE TO DROP THE SPINNAKER TO GAIN EXTRA DISTANCE AS THEY TURNED AROUND THE MARK AND IT JUST GOT AWAY FROM THEM. THEY DID A NICE RECOVERY AND TURNED THE BOAT UPWIND AND APPARENTLY DIDN’T COST THEM ANY DISTANCE BUT IT DID LOOK MESSY. >>10 BOAT LENGTHS AHEAD OF THEM. JIM: THOSE RADAR GUNS WE HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT, THAT’S A LASER PLUS A COMPASS TO GIVE YOU RANGE AND BEARING. YOU CAN FIGURE OUT WHAT’S GOING ON, WHETHER THEY ARE GAINING, WHETHER HIGHER OR LOWER. AND MORE KELP CLEANING ON AMERICA 3. DAVE DELEN BOUGH, SCRATCHING HIS BEARD, TACK TIGS. THE Z LEG ONCE WE GO BACK TO WINDWARD. THE BUTTON HOOK TURN AROUND MARK NUMBER SIX. GARY: SURPRISING STRATEGY BY IL MORO SAILING ON THE STARBOARD TACK WITH THE WIND COMING OVER THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BOAT. NO MANEUVERING. THEY HAVE ONLY HAD ONE TACK FROM THE START. THEY ARE TRYING TO WORK THE BOAT SPEED GOING FAST AND NOT MANEUVERING. MANEUVERING SEEMED TO PAY OFF IN THE FIRST LEG BUT THEY AREN’T USING IT TO THEIR ADVANTAGE HERE. I’M SURPRISED. PETER: THE WIND HAS SHIFTED AROUND, MORE CLOCKWISE, MORE FROM THE RIGHT. THIS STARBOARD TACK, THE COURSE THEY ARE ON RIGHT NOW IS MUCH CLOSER TO THE TOP MARK THAT THEY TACKED OVER. SO PAUL CAYARD TRYING TO GET DOWNWIND OF THE MARK BEFORE HE INITIATES ANY SORT OF TACKING DUEL. GARY: ANY DIFFERENCE IN SPEED NOW THAT WE HAVE BEEN ON THIS LONG TACK? PETER: U.S.A. 23 LOOKS AWFUL FAST, GARY. JIM: IL MORO DI VENEZIA WAS A SYNDICATE BORN IN A BAR IN SAN FRANCISCO, A CONVERSATION BETWEEN CAYARD AND GARDINI. THAT WAS OVER THREE AND A HALF YEARS, FIVE BOATS AND A LOT OF L IFLT RA AGO. THE ITALIANS WON THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP LAST MAY, SOME THOUGHT THEY PEAKED TOO SOON, HAD PROBLEMS IN THE ELIMINATION ROUNDS BUT THEY WERE THE FIRST TO CLINCH A BERTH IN THE FINALS. THEY GOT EMBROILED IN ANOTHER KEY WE CONTROVERSY WHEN BOWSPRIT CAME UP AGAIN. AFTER IT WENT UNRESOLVED FOR THE LOUIE VUITTON JURY, RAUL GARDINI MADE THE KIWIS AN OFFER THAT THEY COULD REFUSE. >>HE SAYS HE CONSIDERS THAT THERE HAVE BEEN FIVE RACES, AND HE CONSIDERS THAT ALL FIVE RACES, NOT TO MENTION ALL THE REST OF THE SELECTION SERIES, HAVE BEEN RACED BY NEW ZEALAND ILLEGAL USING THE BOWSPRIT AND HE CONSIDERS THE LOUIS VUITTON OVER AND IL MORO DI VENEZIA IS THE WINNER. >>I’LL HAVE TO DISAGREE WITH MR. GARDINI. I WOULD POINT OUT TO HIM THAT THE LOUIS VUITTON CUP IS NOT YET OVER. JIM: NAMED AFTER A SHAKES SPEAR CHARACTER FROM OTHELLO, IL MORO DI VENEZIA REPRESENTS THE EPITOME OF A SUPERPOWER. THEIR FLEET OF FIVE BOATS BUILT OVER THE COURSE OF THE 26 MONTH CAMPAIGN IS THE LARGEST HERE IN SAN DIEGO. IN MARCH OF 1990, THE CANALS OF VENICE WERE HOST TO THE FIRST LAUNCHING AND IT GAVE THE WORLD A TASTE OF WHAT WAS TO COME, MORE MONEY, MORE BOATS, MORE OF MR. GARDINI’S ELEGANCE. IL MORO’S CUP CAMPAIGN WAS CONCEIVED BID AN UNLIKELY PAIR. RAUL GARDINI A. MULTIMILLION AIR AND A 31-YEAR-OLD SAILOR FROM SAN FRANCISCO, PAUL CAYARD. TOWARD THE END OF THE THIRD ROUND ROBIN, ITALY AND NEW ZEALAND CONTINUED THEIR CLOSE COURSE RACING. BOW TO BOW AFTER 20 MILES. NIE ZEELAND WON BY A SINGLE SECOND BUT THE ON THE WATER JUDGES RULED THAT A SHEET TOUCHED THE MARK. THE WIN WENT TO IL MORO. IT LOOKED LIKE AN INSTANT REPLAY. THE KIWIS ON THE OUTSIDE. THEY WON BY A SINGLE SECOND AND THE SERIES WAS SQUARED AT ONE ALL. BUT THE BOWSPRIT ISSUE KEPT REARING ITS UGLY HEAD. PAUL CAYARD AND IL MORO HAD SOUGHT TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM FOR MONTHS. THE LOUIS VUITTON JURY HAD PUT OFF AN AMENDMENT SO NEW ZEALAND SAILED ON UNDER THE RULING THEY WERE GIVEN. ANOTHER PROTEST BY THE ITALIANS AND THE PRO TESTIFY WAS UPHELD AND THE STRANGE ANNULMENT THE RACE NEVER HAPPENED. ITALY NOT AWARDED A WIN AND THAT LEFT NEW ZEALAND LEADING 3-1 AND THE ITALIANS MAD. >>I’VE BEEN RACING FOR 25 YEARS. AND I HAVE ONLY TWICE IN MY LIFE SEEN A SITUATION WHERE A YACHT HAS BEEN DECLARED AS INFRINGEING A RULE AND NOT BEEN DISQUALIFIED FROM THE RACE AND HAD THE POINT GIVEN TO THE OTHER YACHT. BOTH OF THOSE TIMES HAVE BEEN IN THIS SELECTION SERIES. JIM: MUCH HAS BEEN MADE OF THE KIWI COLLAPSE AFTER THE BOWSPRIT RULING. WAS IT A FACTOR? THE KIWIS SAY NO. NOT ENOUGH HAS BEEN MADE OF THE ITALIAN COMEBACK. THEY SWEPT 4-0 AND THEY SAID SO LONG TO NEW ZEALAND. THE ITALIANS CELEBRATION HAD ONLY JUST BEGUN. AN OCEAN AWAY, ANOTHER NATION ALSO CELEBRATED. WHEN IT WAS DONE, THE BITTER WORDS PUT ON THE BACK BURNER. THEY WHETHER LEFT TO PONDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE. CAYARD AND GARDINI WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE RACE. JIM: GARDINI SAYS THAT IN 1993, IT WILL BE IMPORTANT THAT WE WILL BE ABLE TO CIRCULATE WITHOUT PASSPORTS THAT WE BE ABLE TO WORK TOGETHER AS A UNIFIED COMMUNITY. WE WILL HAVE TO DEFEND THE AMERICA’S CUP AS EUROPEANS, NOT AS I GARY: PILL KOCH APPEARS TO BE RIGHT. HE TOOK A SHOT IN THE HEAD. BILL KOCH. FRANK: HE HAS TO BE HAPPY ABOUT ALL THAT WITH THEIR LEAD. THAT HAT IS PROBABLY HOLDING AN ICE PACK ON BILL KOCH’S HEAD. WE TALK SO MUCH ABOUT THE MONEY THAT HAS BEEN INVESTED BY AMERICA 3 AND IL MORO IN ROUTE TO THE AMERICA’S CUP FINAL. SOMEWHERE BETWEEN $150 AND $200 MILLION BETWEEN THEM. YOU ADD IN THE MONEY OF THE OTHER YACHTS THE DEFENDER AND THE CHALLENGER SERIES, TOTAL IS AROUND HALF A BILLION DOLLARS. SOME PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY MIGHT THINK SUCH EXPENDITURES ARE OBSCENE ESPECIALLY AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF A BURNED OUT LOS ANGELES A HUNDRED MILES AWAY. GARY, SAILING HAS BEEN YOUR LIFE. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE DIRECTION THE AMERICA’S CUP HAS TAKEN? PETER: IT IS AN EXCITING EVENT WITH 141 YEARS HISTORY. THE EXPENDITURE IS NOT JUSTIFIED OR WORTHWHILE. HE THINK $65 “O” “R” OR $70 MILLION ON A AMERICA’S CUP IS OUTRAGEOUS. IN THE 1970’S, IT WAS AROUND A MILLION AND A HALF DOLLARS. I WOULD TAKE AWAY A LOST TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THIS EVENT AND HAVE THE EVENT — THE DIFFERENCE IN THE EVENT BE THE SAILOR BEING THE DIFFERENCE IN THE OUTCOME AND NOT THE TECHNOLOGY. FRANK: BILL KOCH SAID HE WOULDN’T DO IT IF IT WOULD COST HIM. HE COULDN’T GET OFF THE TIGER. HE INDICATED HE MAY NOT DO IT. IF HE WINS HE MIGHT NOT BE THE DEFENDER. JIM: BACK IN NEWPORT IN 1983 WHEN DENNIS CONNER LOST TO THE AUSTRALIANS, THE ENTIRE BUDGET FOR THE CITY OF NEWPORT TO RUN THE AMERICA’S CUP WAS $800,000. BY TODAY’S STANDARDS THAT WOULD BUY YOU ONE MAST AND ONE SAIL. GARY: IT ISN’T ALL INFLATION. THE AMOUNT OF MONEY BEING SPENT ON TECHNOLOGY, THE SALARIES OF THE CREW AND THE LENGTH OF THE CAMPAIGN THAT’S MAKING THESE THINGS COST SO MUCH. JIM: THE BOTTOM LINE IS IT IS EXPENSIVE FOR EVERYBODY. A COUPLE OLD TIME SAILORS WERE GETTING TOGETHER AFTER GIVING UP THE AMERICA’S CUP GAME. SOME ASKED DIDN’T THEY GET THE URGE TO GET BEHIND? SAID A FORMER AMERICA’S CUP SKIP E. SAID SURE I DO, AND THEN I GET IN THE SHOWER AND TEAR UP $100 BILLIONS. $65 MILLION SPENT BY BILL KOCH, $100 MILLION BY RAUL GARDINI. OVER A CUP THAT WAS ONCE CALLED THE 100 GUINEAS CUP. WE HAD A CHANCE TO SIT DOWN WITH RAUL GARDINI, A FASCINATING MAN THAT HAS GLOBAL VISION. >>THE HEADLINES WERE CONNER LOSES, NOT KOCH WINS. THAT HAD TO GNAW AWAY AT YOU. YOU TOOK AWAY THE KING’S THROWN. IS THAT A SATISFYING FEELING? >>NO. WE DON’T GLOAT OVER THE FACT THAT WE KNOCKED HIM OUT. WE VIEW THAT AS A TREMENDOUS ACCOMPLISHMENT ON OUR PART. AND THE FACT, THAT’S REALITY. THE NEWS WAS CONNER LOSES. IT ISN’T AN UPSTART WINS. THAT’S PART OF LIFE. >>NOT TOO LONG AGO YOU TOLD ME THIS HAS TAKEN MORE TIME AND COMMITMENT THAN YOU EVER EXPECTED IT WOULD. I WOULD ASSUME BY NOW IT IS MORE TIME AND MONEY THAN YOU EVER IMAGINED WHEN YOU GOT INTO THIS AMERICA’S CUP ARENA. >>YES, IT IS, FAR MORE. ORIGINALLY, I THOUGHT THAT WE COULD DO IT FOR $15 MILLION AND HAVE A $5 MILLION CONTINGENCY. NOW, THE NUMBER IS $64 MILLION AND THE AMOUNT OF TIME AND EFFORT HAS BEEN HOE REPUBLICAN DUS. IT HAS BEEN A 12-HOUR DAY, A SEVEN DAY A WEEK, 52 WEEKS OUT OF THE YEAR TYPE OF COMMITMENT. AND IT HAS INVOLVED NOT ONLY ALL OF MY TIME BUT ALL OF MY EMOTIONAL TIME AND ENERGY AND MENTAL ENERGY AND COMMITMENT. >>IF YOU LOSE IN THE FINALS TO ITALY, WILL YOU WALK AWAY AND SAY IT WAS ALL WORTH IT? >>WIN OR LOSE, THE EXPERIENCE IS GOING TO HAVE BEEN WORTH IT TO ME FROM SOME RESPECTS. FINANCIALLY, I WOULD SAY WIN OR LOSE, IT’S NOT WORTH IT. IF YOU ASK ME IF I WOULD EVER — IF I KNEW WHAT I KNOW NOW, WOULD I DO IT? THE ANSWER TO THAT WOULD BE NO, DEFINITELY NO. I THINK THE MONEY IS FAR TOO MUCH FOR AN EVENT OF THIS TYPE, SPENDING $500 TO $600 MILLION IN TOTAL FOR AN AMERICA’S CUP EVENT IS REALLY OUTRAGEOUS. THAT MONEY CAN BETTER BE SPENT ON SAILING AND YOUTH AND SAILING MUCH MORE EFFICIENTLY. WEVER, AS I HAVE SAID IN THE PAST, ONCE YOU MOUNT A TIGER, HOW DO YOU GET OFF? AND BESIDES THAT, I JUST DON’T LIKE TO QUIT. >>LET ME ASK YOU A QUESTION. WE MAY HAVE A BULLETIN HERE. IF BILL KOCH WINS THE AMERICA’S CUP EVEN THOUGH IT IS EXPENSIVE ARE YOUAYWE WON’T COME BACK TO DEFEND THE AULD MUG? >>IF IT COSTS THIS MUCH MONDAY YIP, NO. IT’S NOT WORTH IT. >>IF THERE IS ANYBODY OUT THERE WATCHING WHO SOMEDAY WOULD LIKE TO CHALLENGE FOR OR DEFEND THE AMERICA’S CUP AND GO THROUGH ALL THAT YOU HAVE GONE THROUGH, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE THEM? >>DON’T DO IT. >>BECAUSE? >>SOMEONE ASKED ME WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE NOW THAT YOU’VE BEATEN DENNIS AND YOU ARE ON THE WAY TO THE AMERICA’S CUP. I WAS REMINDED ONE OF THE FELL OWES WHO HAD JUST CLIMBED MOUNT EVERETT, SOMEBODY SAID WHAT WAS THE FIRST THOUGHT THAT WENT THROUGH YOUR MIND WHEN YOU GOT TO THE PEAK? AND THE GUY RESPONDED, HOW TO GET DOWN. JIM: BILL KOCH USE TODAY WEAR A WHITE SHIRT WITH A BULLS EYE ON HIS BACK. HE FELT LIKE A MOVING TARGET. WHEN ANYTHING BAD HAPPENS, I SEEM TO GLET BLAMED. HERE WE COME TO MARK THREE. AMERICA 3 STILL IN FRONT. GARY: AFTER PASSING THIS MARK, THEY WILL BE HEADING FOR THE REACH LEG WITH THE WIND COMING AT A 135 DEGREE SAIL. THE SAILT WILL SET AND THE NEW ONE WILL BE CALLED THE GENNIKER SAIL, 4,000 FEET, TWICE THE SIZE OF A TENNIS COURT. JIM: WE ARE LOOKING AT THE CREW OF IL MORO. ON THIS FIRST LEG, WE WILL SEE IF MELGES SURROUNDS THE WHEEL TO BILL KOCH OR NOT. SO IL MORO HAVE FALLEN 10 SECONDS BEHIND ON THE RUN. THEY LOST ANOTHER 11 SECONDS THERE. THEY ARE NOW BEHIND BY 52. THAT’S THE DELTA. GARY: A RELATIVELY SLOW SPINNAKER SET COMPARED WITH AMERICA 3. THE CURIOUS THING ABOUT THAT LEG IS WHY THEY DIDN’T INITIATE A TACKING DUEL USING MANEUVERS TO THEIR ADVANTAGE. THERE, JIM, IS BILL KOCH. THERE IS THE SAIL NOW IN FRONT OF THEM. BILL KOCH HAS TAKEN THE WHEEL AND WILL BE SAILING THE NEXT THREE LEGS. THAT’S BEEN HIS PRACTICE HERE OVER THE LAST SEVERAL WEEKS. JIM: CRITICIZED FOR HIS DRIVING EARLY GOING, BUT HE HAS DONE A GOOD JOBREAD JIM: LIVE PICTURES. SAN DIEGO OFF IN THE DISTANCE. POINT LOME A. THE VENUE. THE WATERS OFF POINT LOMA. THIS IS RACE ONE AT THE 1992 AMERICA’S CUP. IT GOT UNDER WAY 90 MINUTES AGO. THE MEN OF IL MORO, IT COST THEM 30 SECONDS AT THE START, FIVE BOAT LENGTHS, AMERICA 3 HAS DONE A GOOD JOB, 30 SECONDS, AND THEN IN FRONT BY 41 SECONDS WITH THE SPINNAKER AND GENNIKERS OUT. WE ARE ON THE FOURTH LEG. THEN WE HIT THE FASTEST POINT OF SAIL ON THE FIFTH LEG. MAKE A RIGHT HAND TURN ON TURN FIVE AND THEN THE BUTTON HOOK TURN. BILL KOCH IS AT THE WHEEL. DAVE DELLENBAUGH DID THE PRESTART. THE REACHING LEG. SAILING WITH THE WIND AT A CLOSE ANGLE. PETER: THE REASON REACHING IS THE FASTEST POINT OF SAIL THE WIND COMES AT A 90 DEGREE ANGLE. THAT MAKES THE BOAT GO AS FAST AS POSSIBLE. 69 A LOT OF SPECTATOR BOATS. THE BOATS ARE SAILING AT 11 KNOTS. SPEED HERE IS MEASURED IN NAUGHT CAL MILES PER HOUR WHICH IS DIVOT THAN A STATUTE MILE PER HOUR THAT WE ARE USED TO IN OUR CAR. THE STATUTE MILE IS 5,280 FEET, A NAUGHT CAL MILE, 680. SO IT IS 1/6 MILE FASTER THAN 1 MILES PER HOUR. ONE KNOT EQUALS 6,083 FEET PER MILE. THAT COMES FROM DEGREES OF LATITUDE IF YOU GO AROUND THE EARTH. EARLY ON THIS LEG, NEITHER BOAT SEEMS TO GAIN OR DRAW BACK. THE BIG DIFFERENCE IS OFTEN THE BOAT HANDLING WHEN THEY TURN THESE MARKS. WHAT THEY WILL DO IS TAKE THE GENNIKER, THE SAIL ON THE RIGHT DOWN AND HALL ANOTHER SAIL UP ON THE RIGHT SIDE WHICH IS A DIFFERENT SIZE AND SHAPE. JIM: THAT’S BUDDY, AND IS STUARGO. PETER: MELGES DID AN EXCELLENT JOB. BUDDY SAILED BY THE BOOK, WENT FOR THE FAVORED SIDE OF THE COURSE WHEN HE SAW MORE WIND BUT NORMALLY COVERED HIS OPPONENT AND HE HASN’T GIVEN CAYARD ANY OPPORTUNITY TO GET PAST. JIM: BUDDY MELGES, TWO OLYMPIC MEDALISTS, A BRONZE FROM 1964, A GOLD FROM 1972, THE WIZARD OF ZAND A. WHERE WOULD IT MATCH WITH OLYMPIC GOLD? >>IT WON’T BE A GREAT OLYMPIC HIGH. PROBABLY THE OLYMPIC MEDAL WAS VERY MUCH OF A HIGH FOR ME. MAYBE WITH AGE YOU GET TEMPERED ON ACCOMPLISHMENTS. AND YEAH, I GUESS IT WOULD BE A HIGH. AND IT WOULD BE RIGHT UP THERE WITH THE OLYMPIC MEDAL OR A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. BUT TO GO BEYOND THAT? I WOULD — BECAUSE I’M A SMALL PART OF A BIG ORGANIZATION, I DON’T THINK I’M THE GUY THAT THEY ARE FOCUSING ON. THINK IT’S THE ENTIRE TEAM THAT WILL WIN THIS CUP AND NOT JUST BUDDY MEDICAL GIS DRIVING THIS BOAT AROUND THE COURSE. JIM: 50 YEARS OF SAILING. HE HAS BEEN MARRIED FOR 38 YEARS. HE SAYS I’M NOT SURE IF I’M TOO KEEN ON PEOPLE KNOWING HOW MUCH SILVER AND MEDALS I’VE COLLECTED IN PRIZES. GARY: THEY ARE GETTING READY FOR THE NEXT TURN. YOU SEE THAT ROD, 26 FEET LONG BEING ADJUSTED. THE WHITE SAIL YOU SEE WILL BE TAKEN DOWN AND A NEW SAIL WILL BE SENT UP ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BOAT. SPLIT SECOND TIMING BY ALL 16 MEMBERS OF THE CREW IS CRUCIAL. IT ALL REVOLVES AROUND THE STEERING. THAT’S WHY BILL IS SETTING THE BOAT UP ON THE COURSE TO MAKE THAT CRUCIAL TURN AND THE SAIL CHANGE. GARY: IF YOU DO A GOOD JOB, YOU CAN GAIN ABOUT THREE SECONDS OR HALF A BOAT LENGTH COMPARED TO YOUR COMPETITOR. >>GIVER ME YOUR ADVICE ON WHEN TO START TURNING. GIVE ME YOUR ADVICE. READY? HERE WE GO. NICE, EASY TURN. IT’S DOWN. OK. COMING UP. COMING UP. JIM: FROM THE BROAD REACH TO THE TOP REACH DOWN COMES THE GENNIKER, THEY JIBE, A CRUCIAL DECISION AS TO WHICH SAIL YOU BRING UP. PETER: THE RIGHT CALL. THEY HAVE THE MAST HEAD TIGHT REACHING GENNIKER SAIL. PERFECT SAIL SELECTION. I WOULD ASSUME THAT WE WILL SEE THE SAME SAIL ON IL MORO. JIM: THE DELTA AROUND MARK NUMBER THREE AS THEY WENT BACK ON THAT BEAT TO WINDWARD. 52 SECONDS. AMERICA 3 TRYING FOR A WIRE-TO-WIRE WIN IN RACE NUMBER ONE. JIM: 41 SECONDS WAS THE DELTA AROUND WING MARK FOUR. SO THEY SHAVE ABOUT 11 SECONDS. GARY: AND A DIFFERENT SAIL HAS GONE UP IL MORO. THEY ARE GOING WITH A LONGER REEFG SAIL. JIM: WE ARE ON THE FASTEST POINT OF SAIL. HEADED DOWN TO MARK FIVE. THAT WILL BE THE RIGHT HAND TURN, THE ONLY ONE ON THE COURSE. THEY HAVE NOT HAD GOOD CREW WORK, IL MORO. GARY: A LITTLE BIT OFF THE PACE. YOU LOOK AT THE TWO BOATS, VERY DIFFERENT SAILS HERE. YOU WILL NOTICE THAT AMERICA 3 ON THE RIGHT HAS A VERY BIG SAIL, THIS TRIANGULAR SAIL HERE. AND IF WE COMPARE THAT WITH IL MORO, YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THE SAIL DOESN’T GO ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP OF THE MAST, MUCH SMALLER IN AREA. THAT’S A DECISION MADE BY PAUL CAYARD TO GO WITH THE SMALLER SAIL. IT COULD BE A BIG DIFFERENCE. NORMALLY, YOU WOULD THINK A BILL SAIL WOULD BE BETTER. BUT IF THERE IS TOO MUCH WIND, THE BOAT GETS TOP HEAVY, TILTS DOWN TOO MUCH AND YOU LOSE POWER, EFFICIENCY AND SPEED. BUT AMERICA 3, THIS LARGER SAIL SEEMS TO BE WORKING VERY WELL FOR THEM. THEY HAVE MADE MADE THE RIGHT CALL AND IL MORO MADE THE WRONG CALL WHICH IS A SMALLER SAIL. JIM: BILL KOCH DRIVING ON HIS SECOND LEG. IT’S A REACH. THE FOURTH MARK. JIM: BACK ON LEG FIVE. IT IS STILL BILL KOCH AT THE WHEEL. DAVE DELLENBAUGH OVER HIS LEFT SHOULDER. AMERICA 3 IN FRONT BY 41 SECONDS AROUND THAT FOURTH MARK. WE ARE ON LEG NUMBER FIVE. JACK WHITAKER WILL BE AT THE PREAKNESS. A LOT OF MONEY AT STAKE THERE. BUT NOTHING LIKE HERE. JACK: AS YOU ALL KNOW, THIS IS THE OLDEST CONTINUOUS SPORTING EVENT IN THE WORLD. HOW DOES THE AMERICA’S CUP SURVIVE? WELL, IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN A SPORT OF RICH MEN. IN THE EARLY DAYS, THE CHALLENGERS WERE ALWAYS MERCHANT PRINCES. THOMAS LIPTON, FOR EXAMPLE, UNSUCCESSFULLY FOR 31 YEARS TRIED TO GET THE OLD CUP WHICH WE MAY PUT IN OUR ATTIC. HE SOLD A LOT OF TEA. BARREN BEACH OF FRANCE MANY YEARS UNSUCCESSFULLY TRIED TO WREST THE CUP AWAY. HE FAILED BUT HE SOLD A LOT OF PENS. ALAN BOND OF AUSTRALIA. HE SUCCESSFULLY TOOK IT AWAY FINALLY AND IN THE MEANTIME SOLD AN AWFUL LOT OF BEER. WE HAVE ALL HEARD ABOUT HOW MUCH MONEY THAT BILL KOCH AND GARDINI HAVE PUT INTO THIS. SOMETIMES IN THE FACE OF THE SOCIETY WE LIVE IN, IT SEEMS A LITTLE ODD. BUT I SEE NO CHANGE IF THIS SPORT IS TO ENDURE. AND ENDURE I THINK IT WILL. EVEN AS WE SPEAK DENNIS CONNER IS OUT BEATING THE BUSHES FOR CORPORATE AMERICA AND LITTLE INVESTORS TO GET IN ON IT. IT WILL ENDURE BECAUSE OF THE GREAT EGO AND DRIVE OF THE PEOPLE INVOLVED. BUT FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE, IT WILL STILL BELONG IN THE WORLD OF J.P. MORGAN, WHO ONCE SPOKE ABOUT YACHTS SAYING IF YOU HAVE TO ASK HOW MUCH THEY COST, YOU CAN’T AFFORD IT. JIM? JIM: WELL SAID. IT BEGAN IN 1851 AFTER A 53 MILE BOAT RACE AROUND THE ISLE OFIGHT. IT WAS CALLED THE 100 GUINEAS CUP BACK THEN. 134 OUNCES OF SILVER. A BOTTOMLESS CUP. BILL KOCH HAS SPENT $65 MILLION IN PURSUIT OF YACHTING’S HOLY GRAIL. HE IS LEADING OVER IL MORO DI VENEZIA. JIM: LIVE TO THE PACIFIC. IT IS RACE ONE OF THE 1992 AMERICA’S CUP. THE DEFENDER DOING BETTER THAN THE CHALLENGER AT LEAST FOR RACE ONE. BEST-OF-SEVEN, MARK FIVE IN VIEW, THE RIGHT HAND TURN. BILL KOCH EX-OR THEING HIS CREW ON SAYING WE GAINED ANOTHER 30 FEET. WE HAVE HAD TWO RACES IN THIS 1992 CUP IN THE LOUIS VUITTON CUP, THE CHANNEL JER RACES. 20 MILES ON THE RACE COURSE. THEY WERE SEPARATED BY A SINGLE SECOND TWICE. LET’S CHECK OUR SAILTRACK. YOU CAN SEE WHAT’S HAPPENING ON THIS LEG NUMBER FIVE. GARY: BILL KOCH WILL BE VERY HAPPY WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF HIS BOAT ALL THE WAY AROUND THE TRACK, PARTICULARLY ON THIS LEG. THE TWO BOATS SAILING WITH DIFFERENT SIZE SAILS. AMERICA 3 AT THE TOP GOING WITH THE BIGGER SAIL. SO FAR, THAT SAIL SELECTION IS PAYING OFF. A GOOD CALL AND ALL THE PRACTICE THAT THEY HAVE PUT ON PAYING OFF FOR THIS TEAM. JIM: JERRY KIRBY GETTING A BIT OF REST, THE BOWMAN. GARY: JOHN SPENCE LOOKING FORWARD THERE. JIM: IT IS INTERESTING TO LISTEN IN ON BILL KOCH AND HAVE HIM THANK BUDDY FOR LETTING HIM DRIVE. GARY: IT’S BILL’S BOAT. HE HAS BECOME GOOD AT STEERING THE FOURTH AND FIFTH LEGS OF THE REACHES. BILL GETS FAR AHEAD AND WE SEE HIM STEER GOING UP TO THE SEVEN AND EIGHT LEGS. IF THEY ARE CLOSE, BUDDY SEEMS TO GET ON THE HELM AT THAT TIME. JIM: BILL KOCH HAS BEEN SAILING A RELATIVELY SHORT TIME, EIGHT YEARS BUT A VERY SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM IN THE MAXIBOATS. GARY: BILL SAILED AGAINST RAUL GARDINI IN THE MAXIBOATS. IN A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN 1990, KOCH AND A LOT OF HIS TEAM SAILED A BOAT AGAINST RAUL GARDINI, SKIPPERED BY PAUL CAYARD AND THROUGH 21 RACES, KOCH AND COMPANY WERE ABLE TO WIN THAT CHAMPIONSHIP. THIS IS THE THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THESE GUYS HAVE RACED. JIM: THEY HAD A WAGER WHERE THEY WOULD SAIL EACH OTHER’S BOAT, BET 1,000 BOTTLES OF VERY EXPENSIVE WINE. LET’S LISTEN. >>I GOT A SLOW TURN RIGHT NOW. ALL RIGHT. HERE WE GO. JIM: BUDDY ON THE SHEET THERE ON THE PORT SIDE. 689 YOU GET THE OLD SAIL DOWN AND THE NEW SAIL UP. PRIORITYWISE, YOU ALWAYS CONCENTRATE ON THE NEW SAIL, NOT THE OLD. AND THIS CREW IS DOING A SPECTACULAR JOB OF GETTING NEW SAILS FLYING. GOOD WORK. JIM: THEY WILL TAKE DOWN THE REACHING HEDSEL, JIBE, AND SET THE GENNIKER. HERE COMES IL MORO INTO MARK NUMBER FIVE. THE DELTA WAS 41 SECONDS BACK AT THE WING MARK. SO A GOOD JOB BY BILL KOCH AND HIS AMERICA 3 CREW ON THIS FIFTH LEG. THREE LENGTHS TO GO. 55 SECOND LEAD. AMERICA 3 HAS STRETCHED THEIR LEAD TO NINE MORE SECONDS. GARY: A BOAT LENGTH AND A QUARTER. THAT’S A GOOD GAIN. THE WRONG CALL FOR ITALY AS THEY GET THAT SPINNAKER ON DECK. GOOD CALL BY AMERICA 3. I DON’T THINK THE CREW WORK ON IL MORO LOOKS AS GOOD AS AMERICA 3. JIM: AROUND TOWN, THE ITALIANS PARTIED VERY HEARTY AFTER THEY KNOCKED OUT THE KIWIS. SOME THOUGHT THEY WERE CELEBRATING TOO LONG. PETER: I DON’T BELIEVE THAT. THEY HAVE SOME OF THE MOST PROFESSIONAL SAILORS AROUND. THEY KNOW THEIR MAIN GOAL WAS WINNING THE TRIALS WAS JUST A STEP ALONG THE WAY TO WINNING THE AMERICA’S CUP. JIM: SO THE RED BOAT STILL TRYING TO CATCH UP WITH THE WHITE BOAT. THE RED BOAT BELONGS TO THE CHALLENGE JER. AND THE WHITE BOAT BELONGS TO THE DEFENDER. JIM: OUR SAILING TEAM WELCOMES YOU BACK. FRANK GIFFORD IS HERE. JACK WHITAKER IS HERE. PETER ICE ISLER. THE MEN ABOARD AMERICA 3 AND IL MORO. JIM: AT LEAST 30 OF THOSE SECONDS CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO A VERY COSTLY ERROR MADE BY THE ITALIANS ABOUT TWO HOURS AGO. GARY: ALL THROUGH THE PRESTART MANEUVERS, PAUL CAYARD ENJOYED THE EDGE BUT RIGHT AT THE GUN CAYARD JUMPED THE GUN, OVER THE LINE AND UNDER THE RULES IF YOU ARE OVER THE LINE WHEN THE GUN GOES OFF, YOU MUST BEAR OFF AND HEAD BACK TOWARD THE LINE. AMERICA 3, TOP OF THE SCREEN, STRETCHING OUT THEIR LEAD TAKING A BIG LEAD A VERY COSTLY MISTAKE BY PAUL CAYARD, MISJUDGED THE LINE AND AS A RESULT HE WAS WELL BEHIND AFTER THE START. JIM: ROBERT HOPKINS OUT OF YALE WITH THAT RAY GAR GUN. THE CHIEFFI BROTHERS ARE THE AFTERGUARD ALONG WITH PAUL CAYARD. AN AMERICAN WHO LIVED IN ITALY FOR TWO YEARS TO PREPARE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. PAUL STARTED SAILING BACK WHEN HE WAS ABOUT EIGHT YEARS OF AGE. HIS TALENT WAS SPOTTED BY ONE OF THIS EVENT’S MOST COLORFUL AND CAN TANK RUSS CHARACTERS, THE LATE TOM BLACKALLER. PAUL CAYARD, A NEW WORLD VISION OF AMERICA’S CUP AND CONTROVERSY TO BOOT. JIM: WE KNOW YOU HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A CLARIFICATION ON THE BOWSPRIT ISSUE FOR SOME TIME. TO SOME LESS KNOWLEDGEABLE IT APPEARS YOU WAITED UNTIL YOU WERE DOWN 4-1 TILL YOU PLAYED YOUR TRUMP CARD. >>IT LOOKS LIKE THAT. LIKE YOU SAID, THERE IS PLENTY OF DOCUMENTATION THAT SHOWS THAT I NOT ONLY WROTE LETTERS AND OBJECTED VERBALLY TO THE RULES THAT THE CHALLENGER SELECTION SERIES WAS USING BUT I ALSO SAT DOWN WITH THE CHAIRMAN OF THE CHALLENGER SELECTION SERIES FOUR DAYS BEFORE THE FINALS AND SAID THIS WILL BLOW UP. THIS IS NOT GOING TO GO AWAY. THEY COULDN’T HEAR WHAT I WAS SAYING. WHAT I DID IN THE RACES IS I WAITED UNTIL I HAD ALL THE EVIDENCE AND I FELT I WAS PREPARED TO MAKE A VERY GOOD PRESENTATION, BECAUSE I COULD FEEL THE RESISTANCE FROM THE JURY, ALL THE POWERS THAT BE AND CERTAINLY NEW ZEALAND WOULD RESIST. I WANTED TO MAKE SURE I WAS ORGANIZED, VERY WELL PREPARED AND WHEN I WAS READY I WENTN THERE. JIM: HOW MUCH OF IT WAS A PSYCHOLOGICAL PLOI TO THROW A MONKEY WRENCH IN THE KIWIS’ PREPARATION AND GIVE YOUR GUYS AN EMOTIONAL PLUG? >>I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE CREDIT FOR BEING THAT SMART. IT WASN’T PRECONCEIVED TO PSYCHOLOGICALLY DAMAGE THEM. IN RETROSPECT NOW I LOOK AT IT AS A MANAGER THAT I AM OF THIS SYNDICATE. I AM AMAZED THAT THE MANAGEMENT OF THAT SYNDICATE COULD ALLOW AN ISSUE LIKE THAT TO BECOME SUCH A VOLATILE AND PIVOTAL POINT OF OF THE MOST IMPORTANT RACES OF THEIR LIVES. AND YES IT HAD A TREMENDOUS PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT ON THEM. THE FACT THAT IT HAPPENED RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FINALS RUINED THEM. JIM: WERE THE CUBANS TRYING THAT WITH YOU, THE FRENCH SAIL IN THE “L.A. TIMES”? ANY CREDENCE TO THAT OR ARE THEY TRYING TO THROW YOU OFF YOUR GAME? >>DOING A LITTLE BIT OF THAT AND FRANKLY I FEEL I’M VERY CONFIDENT. I KNOW WHO DESIGNED ALL MY SAILS AND WHO DESIGNED MY BOAT AND MAST AND EVERYTHING. I HAVE NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. AND IT REALLY ISN’T AFFECTING US THAT MUCH. JIM: AS FAR AS YOU ARE CONCERNED THE SYNDICATE AND BOAT, ALL CLEAN? >>ABSOLUTELY CLEAN. JIM: BACK LIVE LOOKING AT PAUL CAYARD THERE. HE SPEAKS THREE LANGUAGES. HIS FATHER WAS FRENCH. HIS WIFE IS SWEDISH. TAKEN UP TEMPORARY RESIDENCE IN ITALY FOR OVER TWO YEARS. THEY KNOCKED OUT THE KIWIS. PETER, WE TALK A GREAT TEEL ABOUT THE KIWI COLLAPSE WHEN THEY WERE AHEAD 3-1. WE HAVEN’T A WHOLE LOT ABOUT THIS GREAT ITALIAN COMEBACK. PETER: IT WAS INCREDIBLE. WE SAW THE VERY BEST SIDE OF A FORMIDABLE TEAM, THE IL MORO DI VENEZIA CHALLENGE. THEY WERE THE FIRST TEAM TO GET STARTED FOR THIS AMERICA’S CUP CAMPAIGN. THEY PEAKED AT THE RIGHT TIME AND THAT’S WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT IN COMPETITIVE SPORTS. JIM: THEY HAVEN’T ADDRESSED WHAT WENT WRONG WITH THAT KIWI EVENT THEY WERE■ AHEAD 4-1 BEFORE PRESIDENT ITALIAN TEAM WON. ON THE SCORE BOARD IT WAS 4-1 THE ITALIANS WERE ONE RACE AWAY FROM BEING OUSTED. MICHAEL FAY HAVING VICTORY SNATCHED AWAY FROM HIM. GARY: ONE OF THE BIGGEST COLLAPSES IN SPORTS. IT WOULD BE LIKE BEING IN THE SUPER BOWL UP 30-3 AFTER THE END OF THE THIRD QUARTER AND THEN FALLING APART, LOSING 35-30. IT WILL BE A LONG TIME THAT THE KIWIS SPEND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IN THE WORLD HAPPENED. IT WAS A TOTAL COLLAPSE. THIS TURN AT THIS MARK IS THE TOUGHEST MOVE IN SAILING BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO TURN ALMOST 360 DEGREES AROUND THE MARK, TAKE THE GENNIKER DOWN, GET THE JIB UP AND TURN AND GO BACK UPWIND. JIM: THIS IS THE BUTTON HOOK TURN AND BRAND NEW ON THIS AMERICA CUP RACE COURSE. 180 DEGREE TURN. A HAIRPIN TURN. KIND OF LIKE LEMANS, IF YOU WILL. GARY: AMERICA 3 TAKING THEIR SAIL OFF EARLY. THIS IS A CONSERVATIVE MOVE. THEY ARE AHEAD AND DON’T WANT TO RISK MISTAKES. JIM: IF YOU HAD TO BET, WILL BUDDY TAKE OVER AT THE WHEEL? PETER: WOULD I BET THAT IL MORO HAS CLOSED ON THIS REACHING LEG. JIM: IT WAS 55 SECOND LEAD AT THE LAST MARK. 689 IL MORO HAD TROUBLE GETTING THAT SPINNAKER ON DECK THE LAST TIME THEY CAME AROUND THE LEEWARD MARK. JIM: 42 WAS THE TELL AT THAT. PETER, YOU WERE EXACTLY RIGHT. THEY KNOCKED EIGHT SECONDS OFF. WE GO BACK ON A BEAT TO WINDWARD NEXT. SO THOSE GRINDERS ABOARD THAT RED HULL CHALLENGING BOAT, THELG ALL GET A WORKOUT. BACK TO WINDWARD AGAIN ON LEG NUMBER SEVEN AND THE RUN TO DOWNWIND FINISH. THAT WOULD BE IT. RACE ONE OF THE AMERICA’S CUP. A BEST-OF-SEVEN. THIS BOAT TRYING TO HANG ON. THE TACKING DUEL ABOUT TO ENSUE. THE GRINDERS WILL GET THEIR WORK OUT ON THIS LEG, THE FINAL A TACK? WE WILL GIVE YOU AN UPDATE ON OUR NAUTICAL NOTEBOOK. TACKING, CHANGING COURSE UPWIND BY TURNING TOWARD THE WIND AND SHIFTING THE SAILS TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE BOAT. SAIL BOATS CANNOT SAIL DIRECTLY INTO THE WIND SO WHEN SAILING UPWIND, OR AS CLOSE TO THE WIND AS POSSIBLE WITH THE SAILS PULLED IN TIGHTLY, THE BOATS SAIL AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE TOWARD THE WIND AND THEN THEY TACK OR TURN BACK AND FORTH TO WORK THEIR WAY UP TO THE NEXT MARK. HEADED TO BARCELONA ALONG WITH PAM HEALY REPRESENTING THE OLYMPIC GAME SAILING IN THE 470’S. WELL DONE, J.J. PETER: GOING FOR THE GOLD. GARY: IL MORO SEEMS TO BE SAILING CLOSER TO THE WIND AND THE WIND IS SHIFTING BACK AND FORTH. THAT’S ONE OF THE BIG FACTORS IN THESE SAILBOAT RACES. YOU HAVE TO WORK THE WIND. SHIFTS AND VELOCITY GOING UPWIND. SHIFTS IN DIRECTION. THE SAILORS WANT TO USE THOSE CHANGES TO THEIR ADVANTAGE. IL MORO SEEMS TO BE MAKING IT WORK. PETER: YES, THEY DO. THEY HAVE STAYED ON THIS POOR TACK WITH THE WIND COMING OVER THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BOAT. THEY HAVE GAINED ON AMERICA 3 AND MOST OF THAT GAIN IS DUE TO THE WIND SHIFTS, GOING SLOWLY TO THE LEFT. JIM: ANYBODY SURPRISED WE HAVEN’T SEEN THE TACKING DUEL START YET? 69 IF YOU ARE GAINING LIKE IL MORO IS ON THE RIGHT, YOU DON’T WANT TO TALK. AND SHE IS GAINING. AMERICA 3 IS GETTING NERVOUS RIGHT NOW AND MAY DECIDE TO TACK OVER AND COVER. A GOOD DECISION BY THE TACK TIGS OF AMERICA 3. PETER: AMERICA 3 IS TAKING THAT OPPORTUNITY TO CHANGE HEADSAILS. THEY PUT UP A NEW JIB AND TOOK DOWN THE OLD ONE. 689 IS THE WIND LIGHTER? PETER: N A LOT LIGHTER. AMERICA 3 DID NOT LIKE THE OLD SPEED IN THAT GENOA AND PUT UP THE NEW SPEED. IT ISN’T BECAUSE OF WIND SPEED BUT PERFORMANCE. GARY: THEY MUST BE CLOSE TO THE DIRECT COURSE THEY ARE HEADING FOR FOR IL MORO TO TACK IN THIS POSION DOWNWIND. PAUL CAYARD HAS A TERM FOR THIS POSITION — BUDDING WHEN YOU ARE BEHIND ON ATTACK AND PHASE, AND THE GUY AHEAD, THEY CALL THAT FACING. NEW TERMINOLOGY FOR SAILERS. JIM: EVERYBODY QUIET ON I TFLT A-25. EVERYBODY QUIET ON ITA. PAUL CAYARD SPEAKS THREE LANGUAGES FLUENTLY. HE WOULD HAVE TO WITH HIS CREW. HE ASKED A QUESTION IN ITALIAN AND THE RESPONSE CAME BACK IN ENGLISH. THAT CAMERA ANGLE IS ZEP ACTIVE. GARY: AMERICA 3 IS AHEAD OF IL MORO. THEY ARE IN A PERFECT COVERING POSITION. PAUL CAYARD TRYING TO WORK HIS BOAT SPEED TRYING TO GAIN 10 OR 15 SECONDS ON THIS WINDWARD LEG SO HE CAN ATTACK ON THE LAST LEG DOWN WIND. GARY: THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO DO IT, BOAT SPEED, THAT HASN’T WORBD AND THE OTHER IS TO GO INTO A TACKING DUEL, THAT SEEMED TO WORK ON THE FIRST LEG AND I CONTINUE TO BE SURPRISED THAT CAYARD ISN’T MAKING IN A NUFRSE HERE. JIM: SOME OF OUR FAVORITE WATERING HOLES UP IN NEWPORT, YOU DON’T THINK THEY ARE WAUFG UP THERE, DO YOU? PETER: THERE ARE A LOT OF SAILORS ACROSS THE COUNTRY WATCHING. ONE IN PARTICULAR, A WINNER OF THE BERMUDA RACE IN ANNAPOLIS, HAVING A HEALTH PROBLEM IN JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL, WE HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER AND GET BETTER SOON. JIM: AS ALL THE TACK TIGSS AND NAVIGATEORS DO, THEY TRY TO PICK UP WIND SHICHTS AND HEADERS. THE WE WILL EXPLAIN WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT. >>NO BOAT CAN SAIL DIRECTLY TOWARDS THE WIND. THEY MUST TACK AND FORTH ALWAYS SAILING AS CLOSELY TO THE WIND AS POSSIBLE, ABOUT A HAD A DEGREE ANGLE. THE WIND IS RARELY CONSTANT SO SAILORS MUST ALTER THEIR COURSE TO COMPENSATE FOR THE SHIFTS. AS THE WIND MOVES TO THE RIGHT THE BOAT CAN TURN TO THE RIGHT KEEPING A CONSTANT ANGLE WITH THE NEW WIND. AS IT SHIFTS TO THE LEFT THE SKIPPER MUST TURN LEFT. NOTE THE TRACK OF THE BOAT AS IT REACTS TO THESE SHIFTS. ON THE RACE COURSE, WE SOMETIMES SEE THE BOAT SAILING IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS AS THEY GET FARTHER APART THE AFFECT OF ANY SHIFT GROWS. SAILING UPWIND IS LIKE CLIMBING A LADDER WITH THE RUNGS ALIGNED PERP DICK LAR TO THE CURRENT WIND DIRECTION. HERE, TWO BOATS START EVEN ON THE SAME RUN. THEY SAIL APART FOR SOMETIME AND THEN TACK. BUT IF THE WIND REMAINS STEADY, WHETHER THEY COME TOGETHER, THEY WILL STILL BE DEAD EVEN ON THE SAME LADDER RUNG. NOW WATCH WHAT HAPPENS IN THE CASE OF A WIND SHIFT TO THE LEFT. THE BOATS START EVEN AND SAIL UPWIND EVEN CLIMBING THE LADDER EQUALLY. AS THE WIND SHIFTS LEFT THE LADDER RUNGS ROTATE. IMMEDIATELY THE BOAT ON THE LEFT, RED, BENEFITS FROM THE SHIFT. AS THEY CONVERGE THE GAIN IS APPARENT. ONE AND A HALF RUNGS AND THE LEADER IS NOW THAT MUCH CLOSER TO THE TOP MARK. WHEN THE WIND SHIFTS TO THE RIGHT, YOU GUESSED IT. THE BOAT ON THE RIGHT SIDE WILL GAIN. THE BOATS ARE EVEN UNTIL THE WIND SHIFTS. THEN INSTANTLY, THE ADVANTAGE GOES TO THE BOAT ON THE RIGHT A GAIN OF ONE AND A HALF LADDER RUNGS OF THE THEY TACK OVER AND CONSOLIDATE THAT GAIN. A FEW WIND SHIFTS CAN HAVE MORE EFFECT THAN MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF BOAT SPEED. THEREFORE, SAILORS ARE CONSTANTLY ATTUNED TO THE WIND DIRECTION AND ARE ALWAYS SEARCHING AHEAD TO SPOT SIGNS OF A SHIFT. JIM: ONE OF THE WAYS AS YOU LOOK FROM OVERHEAD, THE WHITE BOAT THE DEFENDER, THE RED BOAT THE CHALLENGER, ONE OF THE WAY IS TO LOOK FOR A DARK PUFF. AND YOU CAN SEE THAT COMING IN AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN. GARY: IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE TACK TIGS TO READ THOSE PUFFS. THE DARKER PATCHES OF WATER MEANS THE RIPLESS ARE CLOSER TOGETHER AND MORE BREEZE. IF YOU ARE PAUL CAYARD, ONE WAY TO READ THE WIND IS TO SEE WHAT THE WIND IS DOING TO THE LEADING BOAT. THAT’S AMERICA 3 THERE. JIM: AMERICA 3 GOING AT ABOUT EIGHT KNOTS. 689 WE LOOK AT SAILTRACK, YOU CAN SEE THE BOATS ARE DOWNWIND OF THE MARK HERE. IF THE WIND WERE TO SHIFT FROM THIS DIRECTION OVER TO THIS DIRECTION HERE THE BOATS WOULD ALTER COURSE AND SAIL A MUCH CLOSER COURSE TO THE NEXT MARK. SO FAR, THE WIND HAS BEEN FAIRLY STEADY EXCEPT FOR THE DOWNWIND PART OF THE MARK RIGHT HERE WHEN IL MORO WAS GAINING. JIM: ABOUT HALFWAY UP TO THIS SEVEN LEG, ONLY TWO TAX SO FAR, BUT IL MORO CONTINUES TO WHITAL DOWN THAT AMERICA 3 LEAD. TER: THEY ARE GOING QUITE EVEN. AMAZING WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THESE TWO BOATS HAVE NEVER SAILED AGAINST EACH OTHER, THE CHANLT JER TRIALS, THREE MONTHS OF RACING, SEPARATE FROM THE DEFENDER TRIALS, YET YOU GET ON THE COURSE THE BOATS ARE CERTAINLY WITHIN A MINUTE ALL THE WAY AROUND THE TRACK. JIM: LOOK WHO IS BACK DRIVING? BILL KOCH AGAIN. ON THIS 7TH LEG TO WINDWARD. TRIMMING ON THE PORT SIDE. THE GRINDERS. JIM: THE MEN OF AMERICA 3 AHEAD BY 42 SECONDS AROUND THE BUTTONHOOK TURN. JIM: THE RED HULL BELONGS TO IL MORO DI VENEZIA. THE WHITE BOAT, AMERICA 3, BILL KOCH BACK AT THE BILL. THE DELTA AROUND MARK NUMBER SIX. YOU ARE LOOKING AT LIVE ON BOARD. THIS IS A VERY CLOSE RACE. THE DOWNWIND FINISH COMING UP. WE ARE MISSING DENNIS CONNER IN THE FINALS FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1980. WE COULD HAVE THE FIRST WOMAN TO SEE AMERICA’S CUP ACTION IN THE FIRST TIME. SHE IS A MEMBER OF AMERICA 3. WHAT ELSE HAVE YOU NOTICED? FRANK: I’VE BEEN INTERESTED WITH THE EXPERIENCE FACTOR OR THE LACK OF IT. WHEN DENNIS CONNER CAME HERE WITH THE CREW IT WAS LOADED WITH VETERANS OF THE AMERICAN CUP FINAL. WITH THE ELIMINATION OF HIS BOAT, STARS & STRIPES, THERE IS ONLY ONE MAN IN THIS BEST OF FINAL POSITION. JEFF IS ABOARD A GRINDER A. HE WAS A — JIM AND GARY, HAVE YOU NOTICED THIS INEXPERIENCE ON THE PART OF THE TWO CREWS NOE IMPACT? GARY: SO FAR THE ITALIANS HAVE SHOWN PROBLEMS GOING AROUND THE RACE CARS. CAYARD JUMPED THE GUN A MISTAKE THAT HE RARELY MAKES WHEN HE IS MAKING. CREW NOT LOOKING SHARP. THE AMERICANS LOOK MORE PRACTICED UP ANDAYBE THE GRINDER EXPERIENCE TRANSLATES TO THE CREW. ONE GUY CAN SAY I’VE BEEN OUT HERE BEFORE. IT ISN’T SO BAD. I LOST THE CUP. THAT’S THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN. THE BEST, WE CAN WIN. THEY HAVE DONE A GOOD JOB. JIM: GRINDING AWAY, JEFF HAFNUGLE. A GRADUATE OF U.S.C. A REAL ESTATE AGENT. JOHN’S WIFE OR MOM, AUDREY, HAS A DO NOT DISTURB SIGN ON THE HOUSE WHEN THESE RACE RS RUN UP IN MARBLEHEAD, MASSACHUSETTS. OF THE TELEVISION IS ON. DO NOT CALL. BOTHER. GARY: AS IL MORO GETS UPWIND, AMERICA 3 TACKS ON THEIR BREEZE. THE TACK TIGS PLAYING IT RIGHT OUT OF THE BOOK, STAY BETWEEN YOUR OPPONENT AND THE MARK YOU ARE HEADING FOR. IL MORO’S ONLY OPTION, TACK AWAY AND CLEEP THEIR WIND CLEAR. JIM: IT IS FINALLY SHAPING UP TO BE THE BATTLE WE EXPECTED WITH CAYARD GOING AFTER KOCH AND COMPANY. PETER: ONE OF THE REASONS CAYARD HAS HAD SUCH A TOUGH JOB ON THIS LEG, THEY HAVE HIT EVERY WIND SHIFT. WE SAW HOW IMPORTANT WIND SHIFTS ARE. THEY HAVE BEEN ON THE PROPER SIDE OF EVERY WIND SHIFT SO FAR IN THIS BEAT. IL MORO HASN’T HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO TACK UNTIL NOW. JIM: THIS IS NOT A CARTOON. THE COMPUTERS ARE SENDING OFF SIGNALS. THIS IS A VERY ACCURATE REPRESENTATION AS TO THE TACKING DUEL. GARY: THE BOATS GOT OFF TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE COURSE THERE, THE RIGHT GOING UPWIND. AMERICA 3 DOING A CLASSIC JOB COVERING, STAYING BETWEEN THEIR OPPONENT AND NEXT MARK. HERE THEY ARE ON THE LEFT. TACKING. MAKING MANEUVER. BILL KOCH AT THE WHEEL. BLOCKING THE WIND OF IL MORO. DIRECTLY ON TOP OF THEIR BREEZE. IL MORO HAS BUT ONLY ONE OPTION, TACK AWAY, KEEP THE WIND CLEAR. CAYARD HOPES THAT THE MANEUVERING, HE WILL BE ABLE TO CATCH UP, OR MAYBE AMERICA 3 WILL MAKE A MISTAKE. SO FAR, THIS CREW HAS BEEN FLAWLESS. PETER: HAD CAYARD STAYED IN THE WIND SHADOW OF MEFRK 3, THEY WOULD HAVE LOST TWO KNOTS OF BOAT SPEED. THEY PAY A BIG PRICE WHEN THEY STAY IN THE WIND SHADOW WHEN THEY TACK AWAY. JIM: WIND SHADOW, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? PETER: THE WIND COMING OFF THE SAILS OF AMERICA 3, A WIND SHADOW, THE DISTURBED WIND THAT’S ALREADY PASSED OVER THE SAILS OF THE LEAD BOAT. AND THEY ARE MUCH LESS POWERFUL WHEN THEY HIT THE SAILS OF THE TRAILING BOAT. JIM: PAUL CAYARD, STARTED SAILING WHEN HE WAS EIGHT. HAMMERING AWAY. THE TACKING DUEL CONTINUES. BACK TO WINDWARD, LEG SEVEN, JIM: MARK SEVEN. AMERICA 3 CONTINUES TO LEAD. IL MORO CATCHING UP. PETER: THEY ARE. THEY HAVE CLOSED UP A LOT. THAT FINAL TACKING DUEL NEAR THE TOP MARK. JIM: 42 SECONDS WAS THE DELTA AROUND THE BUTTONHOOK. THAT WAS MARK NUMBER SIX. OUT COMES THE SPINNAKER. THIS IS THE DOWNWIND FINISH ON THE RUN. THEY KNOCK SEVEN SECONDS OFF THE ITALIANS DID, THE LEAD IS DOWN TO 35 SECONDS. THIS COULD BE A GREAT FINISH. THAT MARGIN IS NOT LARGE AT ALL. NO ROOM FOR ERROR HERE. 689 THE TAL YANTS ARE TAKING THEIR TIME TO GET THE SPINNAKER TO FLY. THE TRICK IS TO GET THE OLD ONE ON DECK. WHEN THE BROWN O COMES DOWN THE SPINNAKER STARTS TO SAIL. JIM: WHAT WILL YOU DO IF YOU ARE THE ITALIANS? PETER: ONCE HE GETS THE SAILED FILL AND TRIMMED, HE WILL LOOK AT THE WIND DIRECTION AND THE COURSE TO THE BOTTOM MARK AND DETERMINE WHETHER HE WILL GO STRAIGHT, OR TURN LEFT TO GET TO THE LEFT SIDE OF AMERICA 3. MY GUESS IS HE WILL BE JOGGING IN THE NEXT MINUTE OR TWO. GARY: THE TRAILING BOAT HAS THE ADVANTAGE, BECAUSE HE IS BEHIND, BUT HE CAN BLOCK THE WIND OF THE LEADER. SO CAYARD WILL TRY AND DECIDE WHETHER TO TRY AND BLOCK AMERICA 3’S WIND TO CATCH UP OR PLAY THE WIND SHIFTS BACK AND FORTH. HE HAS AN OPTION STRATEGICALLY TO CHOOSE RIGHT NOW. JIM: BILL KOCH HAS GIVEN UP THE WHEEL. BUDDY MELGES IS BACK DRIVING. THE GREAT FON FEEN I HE WAS DUBBED WHEN HE WAS ON THE MAST 110 FEET HIGH. THE GREAT FONTINI. 689 THESE BOATS WILL MAKE JIBING MANEUVERS, ALTERING COURSE BY 60 DEGREES. WHOEVER DOES IT BEST WILL GAIN TIME AND DISTANCE. THE CREW WORK WILL MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE AS WE HEAD TOWARD THE FINISH. JIM: WE ARE ON THE STRETCH DRIVE TO THE FINISH. CAN ITALY COME FROM BEHIND? THEY HAVE BEEN BEHIND ALL THE WAY. JIM: ON THE EIGHTH AND FINAL LEG THE BOAT ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF YOUR SCREEN IS U.S.A. 23. THEY ARE THE DEFENDERS, AMERICA 3, REPRESENTING THE SAN DIEGO YACHT CLUB. THE FONTINI. IL MORO DI VENEZIA ARE THE CHALLENGERS, TRYING TO UNBOLT THE AULD MUG FOR ONLY THE SECOND TIME IN THE HISTORY OF THE SPORT. AUSTRALIA TWO TOOK IT AWAY FROM THE NEW YORK YACHT CLURB AND IT WENT TO FREMANTLE, AUSTRALIA, WHERE WE — WE HAVE SEEN SOME SLOPPY CREW WORK. PETER: THEY ARE JIBING AROUND ONCE AGAIN. AND THAT WAS MUCH BETTER THAN THEIR LAST JIBE WHEN THE SPINNAKER POLE DROPPED IN THE WATER. JIM: 35 SECONDS. THE DELTA AROUND THAT 7TH MARK. THE COURSE HEADING. 170 SSE, 10-12 KNOTS. THE SEAS ARE DOWN FROM WHERE WE STARTED OUT. GARY: I DON’T THINK IL MORO FEELS GOOD ABOUT THEIR BOAT SPEED. AND ON THE FOREDECK, THEY ARE GETTING READY FOR ANOTHER SPINNAKER. WE CAN SEE ANOTHER SAIL CHANGE AS AMERICA 3 PLAYS IT EXACTLY RIGHT, STAYING BETWEEN IL MORO AND THE FINISH LINE, COVERING FROM THE HEAD ON THIS DOWNWIND LEG. JIM: IL MORO GOING AT ABOUT 7.5 KNOTS. GARY: WE HEAD DOWNWIND HERE THE BOATS ARE GOING FOR THE FINISH WHICH IS ABOUT A MILE AND A HALF AWAY. THEY WILL BE JIBING DOWNWIND GOING FOR THE LINE. AMERICA 3 RIGHT HERE WILL ONLY STAY BETWEEN THEM AND THE ITALIANS AS THEY HEAD DOWN THIS LEG OF THE THE WHOLE OBJECT IS TO STAY BETWEEN ONE BOAT AND THE BOAT YOU ARE RACING AGAINST AS THEY HEAD FOR THE FINISH LINE. JIM: TREMENDOUS SPECK TATEOR GROUP. THEY HAD BOAT CONTROL AT THE BEGINNING OF THE RACE. ONCE UNDER WAY, IT HAS BEEN ALL AMERICA 3. THEY HAVE LED BY 31 SECONDS OR MORE THIS ENTIRE RACE. PETER: LOOKING HAPPY AND RELAXED ON BOARD AS THEY LOOK BACK AT THE OTHER BOAT. PETER: VERY AGGRESSIVE JIBING DUEL GOING ON. CAYARD THROWING JIBE AFTER JIBE AFTER AMERICA 3 TRYING TO FORCE A MISTAKE. GARY: THE LAST COUPLE JIBES SEEMED TO BE BETTER BY IL MORO AFTER THAT SHAKY ONE WHERE THEY DROPPED THE POLE IN THE WATER. PETER: EXCELLENT ONE THERE. AND THEIR SPEN KERR SAILS REMAIN FULL AFT TURN. AMERICA 3 HAS HAD A COUPLE OF SLOPPY JIBES AS OF LATE. GARY: THE WIND OFF THE SAIL GOES IN THIS DIRECTION HERE. AMERICA 3 JIBING IN THIS POSITION WILL TRY AND KEEP CLEAR WIND. THE ITALIAN WIND SHADOW IS RIGHT THERE. AMERICA 3 IS AT RISK RIGHT NOW HAVING THEIR WIND BLANKETED. HERE COMES ITALY RIGHT BACK. JIM: THAT IS FROM THE BACK OF AMERICA 3 LOOKING IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR BACK AT IL MORO. GARY: AMERICA 3 DOES NOT HAVE TO JIBE BECAUSE THEY ARE LEADING, BUT IT IS A SAFE THING TO DO, TO STAY BETWEEN YOUR OPPONENT AND THE MARK YOU ARE HEADING FOR AND KEEP YOUR WIND CLEAR. A TRICKY BALANCE. PETER: BILL KOCH THINKS THEY HAVE BEEN LOSING SOME, SO THEY ARE TAKING A SPLIT AND SAILING IN A STRAIGHT LINE. JIM: THE FINISH LINE IN VIEW. GARY: THE FINISH LINE IS ONLY ABOUT 1.3 MILES AWAY. YOU CAN SEE THE JIBES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RACE COURSE HERE. NOW AMERICA 3 ON THE RIGHT SPLITTING JIBES GOING DOWNWIND. IF THE WIND SHIFTS AS WE SAW PETER’S PIECE EARLIER, TO THE RIGHT, THAT WILL BE TO THE ADVANTAGE OF PAUL CAYARD. IF IT GOES LEFT, AMERICA 3 WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT. A LITTLE BIT OF A GAMBLE BY AMERICA 3 SAILING AWAY. JIM: BILL KOCH TALKING TO BUDDY MELGES. BUDDY LET’S THE WINDS AND WAVES AND WATER OPERATE AS HIS COMPASS. 689 IF THE WIND DOESN’T CHANGE OR THEY STAY IN STRONGER WIND THEY WILL GAIN OR HOLD EVEN. BUT IF THE WIND SHIFTS THE OTHER WAY, IT WILL BE A BIG MISTAKE NOT COVERING. AND I’M SURE CAYARD ON THE LEFT HERE IS HAPPY THAT AMERICA 3 IS NOT COVERING HIM RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE IT DOES OPEN THE DOORS. WE HAVE SEEN A LOT OF RACES AROUND HERE WHERE BOATS HAVEN’T COVERED AND THEY HAVE LOST AS A RESULT. JIM: ONE RACE, PAUL CAYARD HAD A 4:20 AROUND THE SEVEN MARK, HE WENT TO THE LEFT SIDE OF THE COURSE, 1:40, THE OTHER TEAM WENT TO THE OTHER SIDE, AND FRANCE CAME BACK FROM 4:20 DOWN TO WIN THE RACE. IF YOU WERE AHEAD, WOULD YOU COVER? PETER: AT THIS POINT, THAT WAS THE RIGHT MOVE. THEY DIDN’T WANT TO SEPARATE ANY MORE DISTANCE THAN THAT, JIM. THEY ARE STILL COMFORTABLY AHEAD, SAILING FASTER. THEY DIDN’T WANT TO SEPARATE ANYMORE. A GOOD MOVE TO JIBE BACK AND SAIL IN THE SAME DIRECTION. GARY: CAYARD WILL BE PATIENT HERE AND WAIT FOR THE WIND TO SHIFT. IF THE WIND TURNS TO THE LEFT, IN SAILING TERMS, HE GETS A LIFT. BUT IF THE WIND SHIFTS TO HIS ADVANTAGE, HE WILL TURN AND GO AT AMERICA 3. HE WILL WAIT FOR THE WIND TO SHIFT TO HIS ADVANTAGE. IT’S A TIME FOR PATIENCE. HE LOOKS AROUND. HE HOPES IT SHIFTS SOON. HE WOULD REALLY LIKE IT. JIM: THE FINISH OF RACE ONE OF THE 1992 AMERICA’S CUP COMING UP. CAN PAUL CAYARD COME FROM BEHIND WITH HIS RED HULD BOAT? JIM: BACK LIVE IN THE PACIFIC. THE SPECTATOR FLEET. WITHIN VIEW, THE FINISH LINE. ONE MILE TO THE FINISH. RACE ONE OF THE AMERICA’S CUP. IL MORO ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE SCREEN. THE LEADING BOAT, RIGHT THERE. U.S.A. 23. GOOD JOB BY BUDDY MILL GUESS AND THE REST OF THE CREW. BUDDY MELGES. SO MUCH HAS BEEN MADE OF THE BACK OF THE BOAT, AFTERGUARD, MIXING UP PARTS AND CREW MEMBERS OF THE SYNDICATE. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT CREW ABOARD AMERICA 3. GARY: THE CREW WORK ON AMERICA 3 HAS BEEN EXCELLENT. OCCASIONALLY TROUBLE WHEN THEY HAVE ROTATED THINGS AROUND. AS WE HAVE SEEN HERE TODAY, IT HAS ALL COME TOGETHER VERY NICELY. WE GO THROUGH YET ANOTHER JIBING MANEUVER AS THEY COVER TO STAY BETWEEN THEM AND THE FINISH. A LITTLE SPINNAKER COLLAPSE. NOT THE KIND OF MANEUVER YOU WANT WHEN YOU ARE 3/4 OF A MILE FROM THE FINISH. THEY RECOVER PRETTY NICELY THERE. ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT THIS RACE COURSE FOR THE FIRST TIME WE ARE SAILING DOWNWIND TO THE FINISH LINE. IT MAKES THE RACES A LITTLE T CLOSER. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST INNOVATIONS OF THIS CUP. JIM: TRIMMING OVER ON THE STARBOARD SIDE. BUDDY MELGES, 62 YEARS YOUNG. BUDDY HAS DROPPED 16 POUNDS. HIS BODY FAT DOWN TO JUST 11%. GARY: BUDDY IS A MAN THAT’S ENJOYING LIFE AT THE PRESENT TIME. HE LOOKS VERY RELAXED THERE AT THE HELM. JIM: OVER 800 BOATS OUT IN THE PACIFIC WATCHING RACE ONE OF THE AMERICA’S CUP. RACE TWO ON ESPN TOMORROW. GARY: AMERICA 3 JIBING AGAIN, KEEPING A GOOD POSITION HERE. JIM: WALLY HENRY RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA. 27 YEARS OF AGE OUT OF PORT JEFFERSON NEW YORK. GARY: AT THIS MOMENT THE FINISH LINE IS CLEARLY IN SIGHT. NOBODY WANTS TO LOOK AT THE FINISH BUT CONCENTRATE ON THEIR JOBS, TRIMMING THEIR SAILS AND MAKE THE BOAT GO FAST. JIM: THERE IS ITALY’S MOST EXPENSIVE IMPORT. PAUL CAYARD, 32 YEARS OLD. IF IT GOES A FULL SEVEN RACES, IT WILL END ON HIS 32ENED BIRTHDAY. 689 THE CREW WORK ON IL MORO IMPROVING AS THEY GO DOWNWIND AFTER A COUPLE SHAKY JIBES. I THINK WE ARE HEADED FOR A GREAT SERIES. EXCEPT FOR THAT BAD START OF CAYARD JUMPING THE GUN, THERE ISN’T THAT MUCH DIFFERENCE IN SPEED BETWEEN THESE TWO BOATS IN THESE WIND CONDITIONS THERE. JIM: THEY WERE DEAD EVEN. WE FIGURE MAYBE FIVE, SIX BOAT LENGTHS WAS THE HEOR AT THE PRESTART THAT COST CAYARD AND HIS ITALIAN CREW. THE OFFICIAL CITIZEN TIMING SAID 30 SECONDS BECAUSE OF THE PRESTART ERROR ON THE FIRST BEAT. 31 SECONDS. THEY WERE DEAD EVEN EXCEPT FOR THE ERROR. THE ITALIANS GAINED ON THE SECOND REACH. THEY GAINED UPWIND ON THE LAST BEAT. AND, OF COURSE, THE ONE THING THAT ALL OF MR. GARDINI’S LIR AFLT AND ALL OF BILL KOCH’S MONEY CANNOT CONTROL, THE WEATHER. INTERESTING IN TALKING WITH A COUPLE OF THE MEMBERS OF THE STARS & STRIPES TEAM, DENNIS CONNER’S BOAT MINUS THE SKIPPER OUT DOING SCRIMMAGEING AND SPEED TESTING WITH AMERICA 3, TALKING TO A COUPLE OF THE CREW MEMBERS, THEY THOUGHT THAT AMERICA 3 HAD SLOWED DOWN. GARY: THEY SAILED YESTERDAY IN LIGHTER WINDS. AMERICA 3 HAS BEEN RECON FIGURED FOR A STRONGER BREEZE TO REACH IL MORO. IT LOOKS LIKE IT WAS A GOOD CALL GOING WITH THE NEW KEEL. JIM: RACE TWO TOMORROW AT HIGH NOON. IF AMERICA 3 CROSSES THE FINISH LINE UP FRONT SHE WILL ONLY HAVE TO WIN THREE OF THE NEXT SIX RACES TO SUCCESSFULLY DEFEND THE CLUB FOR THE SAN DIEGO YACHT CLUB. THE ITALIANS WOULD HAVE TO WIN FOUR OF THE NEXT SIX. BUT PAUL CAYARD WILL BE QUICK TO POINT OUT AT THE PRESS CONFERENCE THEY HAVE COME FROM BEHIND BEFORE. THEY WERE DOWN 3-1 TO THE KIWIS AND CAME ROORG BACK TO WIN 4-3. GARY: THERE IS THE FINISH LINE ON THE RIGHT OF THE SCREEN AS THE TWO BOATS MAKE YET ANOTHER JIBING MANEUVER. PRETTY NICE CREW WORK BY BOTH OF THESE TEAMS. THE OBJECT IS TO KEEP THAT SAIL FULL. YOU DON’T WANT IT TO CO-LAPS. KEEP THE WIND IN IT AND ADVANCE DOWN THE RACE COURSE TO SAIL FAST WHILE YOU ARE TURNING THE BOAT. IT TAKES EVERYBODY TO WORK TOGETHER FOR GOOD SAILING. WOW, THAT’S A BIG SPECTATOR FLEET. JIM: PETER ISLER WILL POP ON BOARD AMERICA 3. WE HOPE TO HAVE TIME TO TALK WITH BILL AND BUDDY ABOUT WHAT IS SEEMING WILL HE NOW A VICTORY IN RACE ONE OF THE 1992 AMERICA’S CUP. THEY WILL GO UP 1-0 IN A BEST-OF-SEVEN. THEY CAME BACK AGAINST TEAM DENNIS CONNER. THEY WERE AHEAD 3-1 AND THE HOUDINI OF SAILING, CONNER WON 4-5, SQUARED UTHE RACE, AND AMERICA 3 SPED AWAY AND WON THREE IN A ROW THE DEFENDER SERIES, BEST OF 13, THE CHALLENGER SERIES, BEST OF NINE. GARY: EVEN THOUGH PAUL CAYARD LOOKS LIKE HE WILL LOSE THIS RACE, IT ISN’T ALL BAD. HE WILL CLEARLY POINT OUT WHERE HIS MISTAKES WERE. JUMP-START. BOAT HANDLING MISTAKES. BUT THE SPEED DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN THESE TWO BOATS IS NOT MUCH AND AS A RESULT I THINK WE ARE HEADED FOR A GREAT SERIES. THIS COULD GO SIX OR SEVEN RACES. JIM: LET’S GO ON BOARD AMERICA P. CONGRATULATIONS TO A GOOD CREW ON A JOB WELL DONE. GARY: THE BOATS ARE CONSIDERED FINISHED WHEN THEY CROSS THE LINE. JIM: SHAKING HANDS WITH BUDDY MELGES. DO YOU WANT A PHYSICAL SPECIMEN? HE PRESSES 300 POUNDS, ONE OF THE GRINDERS. AND HERE COME THE MEN OF IL MORO DI VENEZIA. 3-0 THE DELTA AT THE FINISH. 30 SECONDS. THEY WERE EXTREMELY EVEN. THAT WAS EXACTLY THE DIFFERENCE THE ERROR AT THE PRESTART COST THE RED-HULLED BOAT. RACE TWO TOMORROW ON ESPN. WE HAVE TO PUT A PERIOD ON RACE ONE HERE. WE WILL GO ON BOARD TO TA

I saw some of the practice runs off San Diego that year. Hard to see it here, but these boats are INCREDIBLY FAST! We on big cruising tourist boats would motor out and a good clip… and these beauties passed us at speed. Truly magnificent sea creatures – everyone of them!

This particular class had to be reengineered I believe. It was very easy to blow out sails on these beasties… and teams did it, sometimes more than one sail per boat per race. Expensive proposition!
